I've had cellulitis before, several times, but it wasn't related to my diabetes - it was all years before I was ever diagnosed. I never needed antibiotics, but I also took notice as soon as any fevered red place would develop. I would hot pack it several times a day, and took ibuprofen every eight hours to reduce inflammation. That's all I got - sorry I can't be more help, Pat.

I had it once a long time ago, many years. I did have to go on antibiotics but can't remember how long it took to get over it, I'm guessing a couple of weeks. I do remember it was very painful.
It was under my arm and Dr. thought I had nicked myself shaving and that caused it.
As to whether it had anything to do with diabetes or not I can't say.

I had cellulitis and that is how my diabetes was diagnosed or it led to the diagnosis of my diabetes. One thing is if the cellulitis is not improving then your husband will need a different antibiotic. If you see the cellulitis rash decreasing then the antibiotic working. If the rash is spreading or getting worse then the antibiotic needs to be changed. Cellulitis is no fun. I have permanent damage to the skin on my right leg as a result.

I'm sorry your husband has cellulitis. I have had cellulitis in my left leg five times in the last 4 years. It is very important that you have him see the Doctor at the "first" sign of redness, warm feeling of the skin, or swelling of the area. The sooner that I started antibiotics the better my leg would feel. The rash part of my leg got better after about 3 weeks. The Doctor thinks my cellulitis was caused by a nick in the skin on my leg from shaving. I was also advised to sit with my leg elevated if the pain was severe.

Please let us know how your husband is doing. I know, from personal experience, that cellulitis is not fun. Stay strong.

Pat,

Keep in mind that everyone is different, but my first symptom was the very warm, red spot on my skin. The rash was second and then the swelling. Encourage him to keep his blood sugar in his target range as this helps with the healing process too. And Yes, it is scary. I hope both of you are feeling better now.

My Mom is diabetic and was just diagnosed with this on her leg a few days ago. The doctor has her on antibiotics like others have stated and she was told it would be very important for her leg to be kept elevated as much as possible as well.

I hope your husband is much better by now!

If your doctor asked you to come back for a re-check, please try to keep that appointment. Also, my doctor suggested to me to apply lotion or cream at night as dry skin can give cellulitis an opportunity to flare up again. Glad your pain is getting better.
