Welcome, and I agree getting knowledge now will help you avoid/ control future issues. I have been diabetic for over 10 years now, type 2. Early on, at around 2 years into this disease my feet started tingling and always felt hot when I went to bed. My doctor sent me for a test and they put electrical leads on my ankles and sent small electrical shocks down nerves in my legs. The leads transmitted how well my nerves were conducting the current into my feet. At that time they told me I had the beginnings of Diabetic neuropathies.

I started managing my diabetes better at that time but by 2014 my A1c rose above 7.0 for the fist time, actually peaked at 7.9....and my feet were getting worse. When I cut my toe nails, I would always cut my skin and not feel it, even if they bled! Yikes!

In April of 2015 I found this website, and after doing a lot of research and reading I started on Low Carb High Fat (LCHF)and Testing food with my meter as prescribed in www.bloodsugar101! Within 6 months by A1c was at 5.8 and my overall health was much improved, including losing 50lbs!..My feet have actually improved and my A1c has stayed between 5.8 - 6.2...and the weight is now down over 55lbs. I can do this for the rest of my life....!

Also, I will mention that at night before bed, I put a body lotion with menthol in it. I stops the burning on the bottom of my feet, so it does not bother my sleep...

Good luck

I almost lost a toe 2 years ago. The podiatrist and I worked hard and we saved it! He also said no creams of lotions near the toes. Gels are okay. I know if we're lucky, we can cure a diabetic sore. But is it possible to cure the nerve damage of neuropathy and have the nerves regenerate or re-route? I have it in my hands and feet and also have lymphedema in both legs. So it's a struggle for sure and I would love to hear that if we adhere to the important points you have suggested that it will alleviate at least the symptoms. Thank you again for all of the friendly help and knowledge you are giving me and others here!

There's no yes/no answer. I've read reports of neuropathy improving with time and bg control, and others that not much changed but at least it didn't get worse.

I have mild neuropathy and gathered what remedies I know of in this thread. Personally, I take supplements which I think is helping.

Thank you moon! I appreciate your insight and info on supplements helping. I just ordered a big compilation product of vitamins, minerals and amino acids among other things that is supposed to give you what you need to boost your immune system. I am hoping that will give my body a boost.

I have been dealing with type 2 for over 10 years now. I did not get 'good' control of my BS until 2015, when I found this forum and began following LCHF! Unfortunately, I already had neuropathy in my feet. After only two years, following my diagnosis, I started feeling like my feet were 'hot' especially on the bottom of my feet. It was not pain, just discomfort like I had a heating pad on the bottom of my feet. It was like that all the time, but I noticed it most at night. I also noticed when cutting my toe nails, I could accidentally cut the skin on the edge of my nails and not feel the cut. Only the bleeding would alert me of a cut. I have also notice that cuts anywhere on my legs, from the knee down, heal slowly and must be carefully cleaned and covered with Band-Aid and antiseptic daily.

Early on my doctor had me go to have a test done to determine how bad my neuropathy was, and to set a benchmark. They had me lay down and the put electrical pads on my feet and then sent a small shock down my legs. A computer registered the results. It was not painful, but did confirm the problem. I have not had a new test in over 8 years because the symptoms have not changed. In fact since I got control of my BS, I think they have improved, but not 100%....I also use a menthol body lotion on my feet, not between my toes, at night. It works very well to take the edge off so I can sleep.

When my neuropathy is most annoying, my feet are the opposite ... so cold!

Nerves are curious things.
