Default Bladder infections

Clearly I have very weak immune system because I keep getting bladder infections that always go straight into my kidney. My doc wants to put me on a daily antibiotic. I am wondering if anybody has had any experience with anything like this. Dr. thought it was all due to sugar, but now that my A1C has been 5.5%, there seems to be no explanation.

Did your doc do a culture to identify what strain of bacteria is causing the UTI? I only ask because I had a bad UTI a couple years ago and it wasn't going away. After a culture was done, a specific antibiotic was given, rather than a general one, which killed it off.

BTW - I had been on VLCHF for a few years before contracting the UTI.

Yes. She did a culture several times. It's E. Coli. I have had 8 infections in one year.

My wife had frequent bladder infection after having our three kids....she found a doctor here in Kansas City that advised her to take a daily does of Aso Cranberry (Over the counter product). She tried it and no more infections. The doctor told her that these cranberry derivative prevent bacteria from attaching to the walls of the bladder.

My mother who had bladder issues did take a low dose antibiotic for years to avoid bladder infections. Unfortunately, she passed away before we found out about the cranberry med.

Good luck

Thanks, my doctor also recommended cranberry juice when I had a UTI a couple of months ago but I was reluctant to try it because of the sugar content (although I really didn't check how much) but an antibiotic cleared it up. The correct spelling is AZO All Natural Concentrated Cranberry Tablets.

I will look for this and certainly try it in the future although I have not had another repeat but I also don't doubt that it will happen again.

Taso, I would actually recommend getting a consultation with a urologist rather than low level antibiotics first. I know others have indicated that there is a tendency to blame everything on diabetes, when in fact other issues may be present. Sometimes the solution is more complicated because of diabetes. Honestly, if you've had that many infections in so short of time, I'm puzzled why your doctor didn't already refer you because clearly HER solution isn't working.

Thanks for the comments about the tablets Div2Live. My sister is prone to bladder infections and has been getting Splenda sweetened cranberry juice for the last year or two because of the sugar content. Pills would be even better (and less expensive) now that she is diabetic.

They won't refer me. Kaiser is a difficult beast to deal with.

Well, you know about squeaky wheels. Tell the doc that you are unwilling to take long-term antibiotics without first checking in with a urologist to rule out other problems that may be the cause. You simply want a consultation, not to transfer care.

Also try this:
CPP Southern California - Referral information
http://info.kaiserpermanente.org/htm...dcontacts.html

Believe it or not, my family member is being referred by the urologist to an infectious disease guy because of repeated infections. This, after only a 2nd round of antibiotics. So sometimes even the experts have trouble.

edited to add: oh..I didn't realize Kaiser is also outside of CA.

I was telling my brother about your troubles and he reminded me that you are legally (even in CA) entitled to a second opinion for treatment. So try that as another option.
