Default Neuropathy questions

My Endo thinks I have Neuropathy and referred me to Neurologist. I go to him in 3 weeks. I am wondering if the symptoms are typical for neuropathy. About 6 months ago, my calve muscles started twitching all the time. This goes on for about 3 months. Then the twitching moved to my shins. My calves slowed down, but still twitch some. My shins just felt like they were tingling, but my wife noticed they were actually twitching. About 6 weeks later, my right foot starts hurting, on the outside first, then my heel, and toes. My left foot started hurting a little but not as bad. After a month of hurting, my feet started burning on the bottom. They have been burning and hurting for over a month now. My Endo put me on Gabapentin 300 mg 3 times a day and it takes away about half the pain, but does not do much for the burning. I'm surprised I have neuropathy, as I have only been diabetic about 8 years. My A1C was anywhere between 7 and 8.5 during the past 8 years. I was diagnosed as type 1.5 ten weeks ago and started Levemir and Humalog. My feet started hurting 2 or 3 weeks after starting insulin. I was twitching 4 months before insulin. My A1C was 8.2 when I started insulin, down to 7.1 after 6 weeks. I haven't got A1C checked in the last 4 weeks, however my bg average has been 113 in the last 4 weeks. I check 7 times a day. I am wondering if all the twitching I have is related to neuropathy and are the sharp pains typical? My Endo doesn't think I have insulin neuritis because my A1C hasn't dropped that much. I had a EMG and nerve conductivity test done by a different Neuro 5 months ago because of the twitching and he said no neuropathy showed up. Is it common for neuropathy to show up right after starting insulin, and should it get better if I keep my A1C around 6? This has been causing me a lot of anxiety. I am 44 years old and afraid I will live in pain the rest of my life or that something worse than neuropathy may be going on with me. Has anyone experienced anything like this? Thanks in advance.

That sounds different from what I've read from others on the forum who have neuropathology. It's a good thing you're seeing a neurologist.

Also, it's really good that you've gotten a correct diagnosis of your diabetes as 1.5 and are now on insulin. With lower bloow glucose (BG) well below 140 at all times, and get your A1C below 6%, if you do actually have diabetic neuropathy, that should help your nerves to heal.

Thanks for the reply. I thought the twitching was different than what I have read about other people. I am not sure if the pain I have is the same as the pain others have or not. Another thing I didn't mention was about a year ago, 6 months before the twitching started, I got a sharp bee sting like pain, between my tricep and bicep on my left arm. I jerked my shirt off thinking a wasp was in it. The pain only lasted for a few seconds, but it would come and go for the next 3 weeks, and then just quit. I had the same thing happen to both of my sides around the ribcage at different times and they went away after a few weeks. Then the same thing happened to my right arm and then the calve twitching started. I got something going on with my nervous system and I guess I need to try and keep my mind off it until my appointment. I will update when I find out more.

I went to neurologist and was told I have mild diabetic neuropathy. But the reason my feet were hurting was Insulin neuritis. He said after being in practice over 20 years, he could count the number of people he has treated for this on one hand. Just my luck I guess. On a positive note, I just had my A1C checked after 3 1/2 months on insulin and it was 6.0.. He said the neuritis may or may not go away and he took my Gabapentin up to a higher dose. I will update this in a few months to tell if things get better.
