I know that water is the best beverage to drink and one should drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. And as a diabetic I know I need to watch my intake of fruit juices and alcohol. My question is what drink (other then water) do you like to drink that doesn't affect your blood sugar much if at all?
One thing I have found is MiO. It's a syrup that you squirt into water to add flavor. It has zero carbs/sugar and has not negatively affect my BS levels. The only flavors I have tried so far are grape, cherry black cherry, and peach tea. I highly recommend them.
Black coffee, unsweetened iced/hot tea, mineral water/sparkling water/club soda (it's all about the bubbles). Iced bubbly or still water with a slice of lemon or lime.
I don't usually care for artificial sweeteners, but I'll occasionally make lemon/limeade with xylitol to taste + 2 drops of liquid stevia. Works with bubbly water, too.
I usually have unsweetened ice tea. I find it really refreshing and it gives me a break from water. I've also been known to add a few slices of cucumber into ice water. Gives it a nice, fresh taste, as long as you know that cukes don't affect your blood sugar. My meter doesn't complain when I eat them.
Green tea is my first choice for a hot beverage, and in summer I drink it iced. I also drink diet tonic water straight when I can get the diet version. I discovered that the Walmart/Sam's Club (Mixer brand) diet tonic is sweetened with aspartame, so that is out, but the Shasta people use sucralose in theirs, and I like it better than the ones put out by Schweppes (which uses saccharin) & other more expensive brands.
I drink a lot of water. I like green tea hot or cold too. When the weather starts to warm up I like Seltzer Water, nothing in it but carbonated water. If I want flavor in it, I put either a few drops of Capella Flavor Drops which have no sweeteners. (I have lemon lime, sweet tangerine, cola, and spearmint. I really like a couple drops of spearmint in my water bottle by my bed. If I wake up thirsty in the night or first thing in the morning it makes a really refreshing drink.) If I want a sweet drink I'll use a Da Vinci or Torani SF Syrup flavor in the seltzer water and it is just like a soda. (Or add some sweetener to the Capella drops.) I put a little heavy cream into the Root Beer flavor and it tastes like a root beer float. Or some cream in the orange flavor and it is like an orange creamsicle!
I like the Capella drops because they aren't sweet, though they do have a few that are sweetened Flavlet Drops. Not as large a selection as the ones above.
Food Lion of all places has a very nice selection of seltzer waters infused with natural fruit flavors - just sparkling water and natural flavor - no sweeteners of any kind. They are Food Lion brand and awesome!
I made a fabulous "soda" last night: club soda (aka seltzer water, sparkling water, etc) with 1/2 oz (use a marked measuring shot glass) 100% black cherry juice, a dash of vanilla extract, and 3 drops of stevia. Only 11 calories and 2.7 grams carbs. It was SO tasty.
Your fortunate if you can drink tap water. Here the water is so bad even getting it from a filtering company doesn't help. Best I can do is make tea or coffee or use diet sodas. Shame too cause I miss drinking tap water.
I know a good number of bottle water is in fact just tap water. Read the fine print on the bottle label it will tell you. Around where I live, Nestle brand bottle water is just Dallas tap water.
Loved my Oo Long Hot Tea Long with no Sugar just as a personal preference for over 40 years now .. Still enjoy it at home most every morning Thankfully is one thing didn't have to alter or give up .. I still do drink coffee with half and half if out and about not going to try and carry heavy cream around everywhere I go and so far no bad results.. I have a Coke Zero now and then as well, although was never a fan of Soda anyway .. I do miss my orange juice but have managed to get away with a small can of V-8 (5.5 oz) now and then .. I am fortunate to have good well water around some of the Purest Springs in North FL so drink lots of water too ..
I know many people are against the chemicals (as they should be), but I found for a treat now and then, a tall glass of crystal light is so refreshing, and doesn't raise my BS. The lemonade one is the best tasting.
I tend to stick with the bottled waters if I want a flavoured water and regular tap water when at home. I have never been a big water drinker and when I do drink it, it absolutely must be ice cold! As far as coffee and tea goes, they are diuretics and leave you even more dehydrated so I limit myself to one cup of coffee first thing in the morning.
There are liquid and powdered Stevia sweeteners. I prefer the KAL brand powdered.
