Default how do I lower my fasting blood sugar

I am a new member; I've been reading a lot of the threads and I am very impressed with the knowledge of the members here. I feel like I am in a wilderness, and struggling to find a doctor who is supportive of the low carb, high fat life, though I have lost seven pounds in the past two months. My A1C climbed to 6.1 and my family doctor told me to eat whole grains. I bought a meter based on Dr. Bernstein's book and since the French fries spiked me, figure carbs are not a good idea, or at least a lot of them. I am celiac and waiting to see the endocrinologist, but not hopefully. it did not go well at the family doctor. my problem is the low number which is in the morning somewhere between 102 and 116, does not go ver 120 or 122 after eating, sometimes drops into the nineties after exercise, but not reliably.Will this change over time?

Hello and welcome, Odalisque. What are your target numbers? The numbers you have posted look fine to me. A fasting of 102 isn't half bad. When you test for postprandials, how long do you wait? What are you eating?

I have been waiting for the endocrinologist. so I don't know what a good target number is. it just is so frustrating that it won't go below the low 100s. MY family doctor was really unhappy about the LCHF diet choice BUT I am very insulin resistant and it was impossible for me to lose weight until I began to raise the fat percentage. so I did not get very far with her. I am 59 and I think I have been over the edge for a while.Being celiac I am always anemic and that is supposed to skew the A1c, from what I've read. I was exhausted all winter and also getting tingling in my arms and hands at night which scared me. I have been eating eggs for breakfast, meat and veggies for lunch, and again at dinner. About 25 carbs per day. I used to get really hungry Between meals so I was snacking , but now I see the glucose level is around 100 so I just let it go, and wait for the meal. Does not feel good. But I assume that those feelings will pass. But wonder if my sugar numbers will ever get lower.

Forgot! I was testing one and two hours post-meal.But not spiking over 120, so that is not my concern. it's the morning number.

I don't see anything wrong with your numbers, fasting or otherwise. But I do need to ask which Dr. Bernstein you're following. The Diabetes Solution is Dr. Richard Bernstein and he's a trusted resource for diabetes guidance.

Then there are so-called diet/health clinics run by a Dr. Stanley Bernstein, but he isn't one of our recommended resources. When you mentioned french fries, it made me wonder if your plan is from Stanley Bernstein. Is it? What kind of meter is it that is based on this book?

I was referring to Richard Bernstein.
The French fry test was to see, once I had gotten a meter, and since I was doing low carb, where I would be with a starch. my number spiked to 145 about an hour later. It seems as long as I avoid those kinds of carbs, I won't go past 125, usually not past 122. on another occasion my husband did a stir fry with shrimp, how bad could it be? and I spiked, couldn't believe it, then I took the meal apart. The hoisin sauce he used was 10 grams of carb per tablespoon. my number went from 148 and stayed elevated over the next day or so; not at that number, but in the one twenties...Is that normal?
This morning I was at 122. Isn't that high for a FBG?
on Sunday I did some gardening and yesterday an hour of Pilates and walked 4 miles. my muscles are screaming. Thought that should be good for the blood sugar, but 122 when I wake up? and now weirdly an hour after breakfast (gage 2 percent yogurt with tbs cream, blueberries 1/2 cup, 2tbs almond slivers, water) my BG is 148. Never happened like that. Usually drops to 102.
hmmm.

Obviously I am new to this.
you mention nothing wrong with the numbers, but that is only with great care in the food, and still high morning number. Isn't that high?
I've read Richard Bernstein, Jenny Ruhl, and Jeff Volek and the new Atkins.

hmmm.
It is possible that your BG will be high the next day after a high the day before. Happened to me.

So after yogurt you are usually at 102, starting with what number, a 122?

Did you just get diagnosed 2 months ago?
Were you checked for LADA?

In April my A1C was 6.1, and my family physician suggested I lose weight and eat whole grains. LOL! I'm celiac, and in the past several years have had the feeling that I was grain-sensitive; also more recently discovered that rice flour and potato flour/starch are worse than flour, and frankly almost all the commercial gluten-free products rely on those, or manioc/tapioca flour (which after buying a box, realized that has NO NUTRITIVE VALUE). So I suspect my sugar was running high, as those things were part of my gluten free diet, pre-April testing. (Look at the french fry spike).
I do not know how LADA presents. Can you tell me where to look?
When I went for the appt. with my family doctor, she was most unhappy about my choice of low carb diet/high fat diet; and pretty much withdrew herself. I see an endocrinologist next week. So I don't have a "diagnosis"-the family doctor said, well, you won't be diabetic if you lose weight. The only reason the numbers aren't spiking for the most part, obviously, is that I am eating to the meter, and following the diet, and being very careful. If I ate "normally" I don't know where I'd be. ITs a scary thought.
I'm not afraid to limit my diet. I have been diagnosed celiac for seven years,and I am pretty religious, after Mr. Chen got ahold of me and made me read Peter Green's book on the subject (Columbia University)(I also saw an associate of his there, since I live in New York.) So the lchf diet is just more limitation. I can do that!
I have been having trouble finding a doctor; the ones I hear about do not take insurance, or new patients....
It was a terrible meeting with my family doctor. I am not sure I can go back. I felt completely on my own, and dismissed in my own research and reading. Why would anyone recommend whole grains to a person whose glucose is spiked by it? It is very strange. Also advised not to bother with a meter. How else can we figure this out?

Your doctor experience is normal.
try not to worry about it. Plenty of posts on this forum about that!

Look at Bloodsugar101.com for targets.
Everyone makes their own decision.
Typically below 140 at all times since damage definitely happens above 140.
Some like below 120 at all times.
Others like below 100 at all times.
Its an individual decision.

Info on there about LADA aswell. A test you can ask for at the endo just to make sure you don't have it. GAD-65 antibodies (glutamic acid decarboxylase)

I also personally asked for the following tests (Just because I want as much info on my body as I can at this point!):
• Magnesium
• Potassium
• Vitamin E
Vitamin B complex
Vitamin C
Melatonin
Vit D

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone)
Ketones
Cortisol
Thyroid
*TSH
* T4
* T3
* Free T3
* Reverse T3

C-peptide
Insulin
A1C
R-R interval study (to check for vagus nerve, ECG to see difference in heart rate breathing deeply in and out)
Oscillometric study of lower extremities (for circulation)
Microalbumin test (urine, for kidney function)


My doc was very accommodating and got them all done even though he hadn't even heard of LADA or the GAD testing for it, nor the R-R interval test. He had to look up how to test for some of the other bloodwork I asked for because no-one had ever asked for them in his practice! He just said he'd send everything to the endo for me. Still waiting on results and I'll see the endo this Friday.


So your AIC was before you started the LCHF, and now you've been doing LC/HF for a couple months and go see the endo. Your A1C should be nice and low.
I'm wondering how the endo will receive me since my A1C is low now after a few months LCHF. My doc referred me due to low insulin, but that can also happen with LCHF. So we'll see. Curious to see how your visit goes.

To answer your yogurt question.

Possible your system cannot handle the 2% yogurt.
Try full fat Greek yogurt, plain, no fillers, and add even more cream to it. Maybe no blueberries?

Reason I asked about LADA is because you said BG is getting worse. If LADA it is possible to get worse. Look at BS101 about MODY as well.

Oh and by my comnet your doctor experience and not worrying baout it, I didn't mean you shouldn't do somethinbg about it if you'd like. You may switch docs if that works for you. Just try ones that take new patients with the insurance you have and hope you get a better one! Just realize that many might be like your current doc.

I told my doc I was cutting carbs, but that's all I said. No detail on LC/HF and didn't mention the HF at all. Figured I didn't want to get his radar up. He was pleased I was controlling with diet and moved on.
