So here's the deal:

My father is 5'6" and weighs 230lbs, is a type 2 diabetic, and eats horribly! He takes an average 10-15 500 mg lortabs a day....I know, it's bad......So, I have decided to move back in with my parents while finishing up college and helping him and my mother both with their diets. They are both overweight.

My father's glucose level according to his machine varies so much! From 180-350 but many of them are in the 220 range. He eats greasy foods and is so scared that his sugar will go too low that he eats a lot of sweets all the time, especially before bed. He ran a low blood sugar when he was first diagnosed, he basically blacked out, and I couldn't wake him up, I called the ambulance but by the time they got here he was awake and fine...I think thats why he's frightened, he doesn't want to go through that again.
He is really unable to move alot of the time because of the neuropathy and the extreme amount of pain he is in, and I'm thinking if he can just change his diet it may help.

He has a new endocronologist and my father has said he really likes this doctor....so hopefully thats a step in the right direction as well.

So, my question:

Is there an actual food chart, for example something that lists the days of the week and actual meals he should eat throughout the days for diabetics.

I'm not exactly sure where to start here, and within the next week I will be emptying the entire house of junk food and replacing it with good food, I just need some suggestions from you guys...If possible I would love a day to day diet planner of what he should be eating to keep his blood sugar at a normal level. Maybe even a reasonable grocery list to get him through the week. Thanks!

Here is a glycemic index chart. It will help you pick food that is much less likely to cause high blood sugar. Eliminating the highs is needed to help avoid complications like you father is having.

If he is really concerned about low blood sugar, perhaps you could recommend fruits instead of refined sugar products. Fruits come with their own benefits, and are less likely to create such a massive surge in blood sugar. They can help in creating good balance.
