Leg pain...

These last few weeks I have noticed a growing ache in my shins. It started as a dull radiating pain in the bones of my shins (or so it felt). Now, it's gotten to the point that I'm calling off work and it feels like a burning around the sides of my calves, radiating around to the backs of my legs. No issues with my feet, just the calves. I had some swelling in my calves and feet a while back, but that seems to be long gone by now.

Anyone know anything? I'm going to contact my doctor ASAP, but I wanted to try and arm myself a little bit first...

Ask you doctor forf a referral to a neurologist. A neurologist can give tyou an EMG test and determine whether you have neuropathy which usually affects the feet and lower legs. Since you did not take care of your diabetes for a long while it is quite possible you have neuropathy now. Having a lot of high blood sugar for a long period can cause many complications with diabetes and neuropathy is one of them. If you get your diabetes under good control and stop having frequent high blood sugar then your pain might get better or even completely stop. That assumes you have not already waited too long. Good luck with your legs.

Richard's advice is very good.

You might want to think if you've been doing anything different lately. Standing more, walking or running more, or perhaps bending at the knees more, or something? I know neuropathy is the first thing we think of as diabetics, but sometimes strain or stress can cause pains like you describe.

You are doing the right thing. See your doctor. Let us know how it goes.

Yeah, I ran through an extensive list in my head of things that might be different in my day to day: exercise, leg usage, rest, diet, stress, the works. So far, though, nothing seems out of the ordinary. Thanks for the advice, both of you...
