Could I be diabetic?

I'm a little bit worried here!! Today I have tested my blood glucose level on my friend's meter twice. Fasting (when we woke up this morning) I got 6.5 and then two hours after we ate some popcorn I got 13. My friend said my readings were high and I should go get tested.

I don't know if I could even have it though, I don't know much about it!! Only my great grandma had diabetes (I'm not sure what type...) no one else in my family. I'm a 19 year old female and I'm not overweight, I am 160cms tall and weigh 47 kilos. I eat pretty healthily and am very athletic.

Lately I haven't been too well, I've been getting pins and needles and weird feelings in my hands and feet and my vision (especially in my right eye) has gone way downhill. My doctor refferred me to a neurologist for the problems in my hands and feet and my optomitrist said my eyes look healthy and I got new glasses. I've also had persistant thrush for the past four months which just keeps coming back no matter what I do.

Does this sound like diabetes? Should I be worried?! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello bumble bee, welcome aboard! Those numbers and symptoms sound very much like diabetes. There could possibly be other things that would give you high numbers so you should see a doctor as soon as you can. An endocrinologist (diabetes specialist) is the best choice so you will get an accurate diagnosis. Not all diabetics are overweight. I was underweight when I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Welcome to DF, bumble bee . . . sorry you haven't been well, but good that you've discovered some important clues. Richard's advice is solid - see a doctor as soon as you can get in. The sooner you start treating this, the sooner you'll feel better and the better the odds for avoiding any long-term complications with your vision or other things. Thanks guys! I went to my doctor about a month ago for my symptoms and he said he did a fasting glucose test last April and it was fine so he didn't even consider diabetes. Should I trust that or go to a different doctor?

Last April is far too long ago to be considered adequate testing for the here and now. You have a fasting reading on your friend's meter, and a post-prandial which is way too high . . . and if the doc doesn't listen, then yes - you could and prob'ly should be considering getting a second opinion.

This is nothing to mess around with. Diabetes can kill us, and before it does that it can hurt us a LOT. All of which can be avoided if we make up our minds to control the high glucose. If the doc won't get on board with it, find a new doc.

I agree with Shanny, you should see a doctor for new testing.

Something just occurred to me. After you ate the popcorn, how long did you wait until you tested? Even a non diabetic will have higher blood sugar if it is very soon after a meal or snack. You should wait a full two hours after eating, before testing. If you are not a diabetic your blood sugar will not be so high at that time. If it is still high after two hours that is when you should be concerned.

I'll let my doc know the numbers I got and see where that gets me. And I waited just over two hours after I STARTED eating the popcorn to test, my friend tested right before me so she was on about the two hour mark. She has type one diabetes and her numbers were lower than mine but she's on some pump? I don't know how that works either!! I'll let you guys know what the doctor thinks
