BG is going back up?

Over the past several days I've noticed my BG is inching back up. I'm still on the same meds and a LC/HF diet. I can't think of one thing I'm doing differently... and I've even lost 15 lbs or so. It's gone from a fasting in the high 90s or low 100s to 133 this morning. It's also staying higher than usual during the day as well.

I'm confused and concerned. Can anyone help me here?

Sorry Hammer,

But clearly something has changed. There's a range of possibilities. Possibilities include (but not limited to):

  • I've got an infection - toothache? cold, flu, urinary tract..... The infection may not yet be showing symptoms and the surge in numbers is down to your body fighting it off. If that's the case, see the last paragraph of this post.
  • I'm being a little heavy handed with portions
  • I've got a "new improved recipe" that I didn't notice
  • My meal time has changed
  • My medication time has changed
  • I've got a faulty batch of test strips
  • I forgot to wash my hands
  • I'm using a new batch of medication - and it's another "new improved..."
Wish I could say something definite because it's very frustrating when you work hard to get good numbers and then something strange happens. All I suggest is that for the next several days you get anally attentive to your rules and see if the problem goes away of its own accord. If it's an infection rumbling in the background and your body wins the fight....

Good luck, John

My bs ticked up when I ate too much protein. These days, managing my protein portions is often tougher than managing my carbs.

I think with our BGs under control we go a little easy on our protein portions, not realizing that our body can convert upto 30% (rough figure) of dietary protein into glucose.

We think of proteins as free and our portions go up a bit but really they aren't. The extra manufactured glucose gets stored and is later dumped in by the liver.

But Hammer, numbers can go up temporarily for any of the reasons mentioned by John above. Sometimes BGs have a mind of their own and for no reason they shoot up... It may just be a temporary thing. Give it more time...Hang in there...

Stress and changes in the weather (especially temperatures) can be factors, too.

I have to up my basal a notch for cold snaps, and now that we're going into a premature spring, I'm thinking about going back down a notch. Some other folks have to do the opposite.

I find I will go 3 or 4 months with perfect bgs then have a terrible week. I think there are so many variables from change in hormones, to change in exercise to position of the moon, who knows. I just accept this as part of my diabetes.

Also have you recently refilled your meds? Once in awhile I find my pharmacy switches manufacturers of metformin and it seems to work differently.
