Default Smelly Urine

I am a 23 yr old male, 6'1" and about 185 lbs with a bmi of 24 or 25 I believe. For the last couple of days I have had an odd odor emanate from my urine. I am a chronic binge eater who tends to overeat sweats and have been so for my whole life pretty much. I went to the Dr. about 6 weeks ago (before this symptom) for a checkup and he did a urine dialysis as well as a blood test, but he never called me up or mentioned that my glucose levels were high. I am assuming that if my glucose was high or if there was a problem with my urine he would have contacted me. Let me also mention that I have had bad heartburn for the past 2 weeks, including this cool draft of air i feel in my mouth. I realize that I have an eating disorder and am going to try to manage my meals from now on. Do you think I should see a dr. to check for pre-diabetes, and if I did see a dr. would he be able to tell me that, or is it difficult to detect?

Most doctors would have you get certain blood tests that would determine if you have diabetes. You should stop eating sweets and high carb foods in the meantime if you have the symptoms that most undiagnosed diabetics experoence. Those symptoms include excessive urination, drinking much more liquids than normal, fatigue, loss of appetite (sometimes), and blurred vision at times. If you have none of those symptoms then you are probably not diabetic. The best kind of doctor for diagnosing diabetes is an endocrinologist (diabetes specialist). Good luck to you!

It depends on what kind of odor is coming from your urine. Does it smell bad like an infection? Does it smell sweet like you might have glucose in your urine? Some foods cause urine odors, too, like some cereals, asparagus, garlic, etc. You can call your doctor and ask about your results. I would recommend you do that. Some offices are so busy they don't have time to call all their patients with results but would discuss them with you.

It could also be as simple as being really dehydrated. If you are processing a lot of food, but not drinking enough water - that in and of itself is enough to create smelly urine.

As for the food, you seem to be at a point where you want to take action and make a change. Good for you and good luck! Strike while the iron is hot so to speak.
