Today I went to the ophthalmologist for the first time since diagnosis (and only the second time in my life) and did the whole dilated-eye thing, plus an extra scan of some kind since he thought he saw some optic nerve cupping (a sign of glaucoma). Turns out I don't have glaucoma and there were "absolutely no diabetic changes" in my eyes. So yay. :D

Thanks. :) It was a relief. I misunderstood my diagnosis for a couple of years and didn't do what I should have done. So my poor retina and nerves and every bit of my body was bathed in syrupy blood. Now I'm on track, but I've been worried about the damage I may have caused. So glad I dodged a bullet.

That brings up a question from me. I've been using a local optometrist for years who has the reputation locally of sending too many patients to the nearby small city for a specialist and when he checked my eyes this year I asked him if he felt confident to treat me. He said yes and did a thorough exam it seemed to me. He assured me he'd refer me in a heartbeat if he saw any reason. Growing up, I was always treated by a opthamologist until a doctor friend said I was not needing one. What say my peers? I really like having a local man who would see me fast if there was a problem and refer me and be able to get me in that same day if he thought I needed help...
