Acadian Fury - a representative of a local medical supply told me their sales reps will give cables to corporate accounts but not private individuals.

Default Getting out cheap.

Following a previous poster's advice I went to eBay and found the correct data cable and ordered two fo them for a total of $5.50 with free shipping. Then a quck Google for the software and I found a link from Abbott Labs that had the driver download and software. So for less than $6 and like a 20 minute time investment I am now a very orgainized Type 2 diabetic and be able to watch my numbers as well as any trends.

Here in Canada, I've always been able to get free cables for my meters when I contacted customer service--that includes companies like Bayer, Medtronic, and Freestyle.

Default usb cable for freestyle lite

When mine arrives I will report back if it works. I can't post links yet. Google "Deal Extreme" go to the site and then search "USB to 2.5mm Charging and Data Cable."
It looks like the usb cable for an ipod. I am going to steal my son's ipod usb cable (4 pole stereo 2.5 and usb) and see if it works. Cable costs less than $4.00.

If it works, $35-$40 less $4.00 = 50-75 free test strips.

Software from abbott can be downloaded from their website for free (requires registration). Saves another $10 on package ($50).

Will keep you posted in a few hours.

Thumbs down cheap cable FAIL

So I just got my $3 ebay cable, setup the software, and plugged it into my 1 month old meter and it is fried - literally. It went blank and I could actually smell it burn or melt or something. Abbott was good about replacing the meter with a local pharmacy and the software tech guy says that the meter will only connect with their special cable that has the light on the USB end. Normally I would not believe that (thus my cheap cable purchase) but after frying my new meter I must assume they know what they are talking about. they really should engineer these things to be more universal or at least include the cable for free IMHO.

Hmm, good to know. I ordered 2 cable for $4, basically a 2.5 to usb for standard MP3/MP4 players. I wonder if disconnecting the power wire would make it work, since the cable allows charging to the device, but the meter does need charging, only data. Will let you know in a week.

The LED only indicates a connection and not significant, but the wiring is most important. I will have to check the schematics.

CAN SOMEONE OUT THERE WHO HAS THE PROPER CABLE, GIVE ME THE WIRING? VERY SIMPLE. CONNECT A CONTINUTITY TO EACH POINT ON THE 2.5 PLUG AND TELL WHERE IT COMES OUT ON THE USB CONNECTOR.

The freestyle lite can be bought on Ebay for 5-10 dollars. I have 3, so I can afford to fry 1 or 2 (hehe).

I have found that the Abbott software is too complicated. It only allows you to auto input the glucose readings from the meter (time and reading). Other medications and times of eating must be imputed by hand. Unless you test glucose multiple times a day, I find it does not have any advantages (for me).

Using Excell would problem be better for me (reading 2x/day) and inputing the times and readings from the meter is just as simple.

Just my 2 cents.

Will let u know about the 2.5 to usb cable. Hopefully ur post and mine, will save some people some money.

thanks for the comeback.

Checked the pinout for 2.5 to usb (for ipod). As there are only 4 wires, disconnecting #1 wire (power) should work, leaving the ground (#4), and data wires (#2#3).

It will require slitting the cable and cutting #1 wire.

At the very least, it will not burn out the freestyle lite.

Will let u know as soon as I receive usb cables. If it works, I will give exact instructions.

OK. Did some homework. It seems that the cheapie USB cable WILL NOT WORK so I save some time.

The original cable 9 pin serial (Abbott), to use USB needs a USB-Serial adapter, which costs $10-$15, and needs to end with a 4 pole stereo 2.5mm male plug.

Abbott offers the new USB cable for (cheapest) $40. there is a black box on the end (w/ LED) which is the usb to serial adapter.

There is a company in Texas, that sells the usb (w/ serial) cable that works with the freestyle lite for 26.95. Google celeritous dot com
freestyle compatible.

As being now obessed, will try to find a simple solution for $15-$18.

Update. Just bought a usb to rs232 (serial adapter) to DB9 for $5 and a DB9 to 2.5mm (3 Pin) cable $7 (includes shipping).

total cost delivered $12. It should work and only thing to do is to connect the two cables together and plug into usb port on computer. Depending on ur Windows, it may need a driver (mabe not).

Will report in about a week, if it works.
