Smile Freestyle lite data cable - how to buy it cheap.

I have been searching a data cable for use with the FreeStyle Lite meter, and kept finding the price with shipping up around $40. The cable turns out to be just a standard serial cable, with a DB9 Female connector on one end and a 2.5mm phone plug on the other end. It is also used for some cell phones. The cheapest place I found it was on Ebay. $4.50 plus $3.50 shipping. This is a good quality cable, and works fine on the FreeStyle Lite and other testers that use this type of cable.
Search for "DB 9 female to Stereo 2.5mm Plug Cable/ Cell Phone"
or "DB 9 female to Stereo 2.5mm Plug Cable"
Keep in mind that most of the newer computers DO NOT have serial ports on them, just USB ports. I have not seen any information about a USB cable that will work with the FreeStyle meters....so if you have, please post it.

I just ordered a USB to 2.5mm Charging and Data Cable for $1.45 shipped from Deal Extreme. There is a product review that says..

Pros:

A great cable, well-made and well worth the cost.

Cons:

None

Other Thoughts:

I purchased this as a data cable for a glucometer. The manufacturer referred me to another vendor charging $30.00-US for essentially the same thing.
For those of you who eBay regularly, you'll see these cables being resold from various vendors. The mark up from them is usually 500%.

Bottomline:

It just doesn't make sense to buy these cables from Radio Shack or other sources, and pay a 500-1000% mark-up. With a little bit of sleuthing, you can find them much cheaper
When mine arrives I will report back if it works. I can't post links yet. Google "Deal Extreme" go to the site and then search "USB to 2.5mm Charging and Data Cable."

I have found several of the cables priced at $50. Best price I SAW was $25 on the Amazon marketplace merchant best and fast. Ordered cable with expedited shipping on November 1. It should have shown up no later than Nov. 14 because I paid for the special S & H. 2 emails to the merchant later, I have yet to receive the cable. merchant claims to have sent it and will send another or refund my money. Very suspicious sounding.

A One Touch Ultra Mini is about $10.79 at Walmart. The cable (I got mine and it works great) is free here:

https://www.onetouchzoom.com/cables

Some doctors give out meters on request. Then the only thing you'd have to pay for would be strips.

Loving the software so far.

I realize it'd be nice to use the Freestyle if it's full of readings already, just offering options.
