Question about OGTT

As I posted previously, my doctor ordered an oral glucose tolerance test because my fasting blood glucose was of concern (5.7- I thought it was 5.6 but called to confirm. ugh).

Since she scared the bejeesus out of me, I have since been very careful with my diet, i.e., I've practically eliminated simple sugar & carbs.

I just read on a few sites that in preparation for OGTT, the patient "is instructed not to restrict carbohydrate intake in the weeks or days prior to the test".

They don't say WHY.

Now I don't know what to do. Will the glucose drink they give me kind of shock my system and I won't be able to process it, leading to higher results? Or will the results be "lower" because I have been eating better?

5.7?? That's OK buy me. I cannot see that would be a concern for diagnosis to Diabetes. next time you see the doc, Ask for an A1C done as this will give a better picture of the average Blood Glucose. A single test is just a test of what it is now. Not over 3 months.

Hi Anthill, the doctor has ordered an AIC as well. Regarding my 5.7 result, apparently the latest Canadian guidelines are to do a GTT starting at 5.6 if other risk factors exist (I have a couple).

So what's the verdict, are you diagnosed a diabetic? 5.7 is fine and I cannot see you to be too concerned.

I don't know. The glucose tolerance test will help make the determination, at least that's my understanding. Right now, the doc seems to think I might be "pre-diabetic". She hasn't talked about meds, only diet & exercise.
