Both HbA1C and frucrosamine tests reflect the average blood glucose level.
HbA1C: the test reflects the average blood glucose level over 2-3 months preceding it.
Fructosamine: the test reflects the average blood glucose level over 2-3 weeks preceding it.

Thanks Iris! I have had the fructosamine test done only twice during my 64 years of diabetes. I wonder why it is not used more often. In your experience do doctors use this test frequently? It is a peculiar name for a 2-3 week BG average since fructose refers to the carb content in fruit. That has always been a puzzle to me.

Hello Richard,

I agree with you that the test name is a bit confusing. It is also called Glycated Serum Protein (GSP) or Glycated Albumin. It is non-enzymatic reaction between fructose and ammonia so this is the source for its name.

It is less popular than the HbA1C even though it is simpler and less costly than that for HbA1C.
When it is usually used:
1. Evaluate new diabetic treatment
2. Evaluate new diet
3. During pregnancy when it is importnat to have good sugar balance and three times per pregnency is not enough.

Unfortunately, I didn't translate the article on the fructosamine so I don't have full explanation as for the HbA1c. Promise to link to it after I will.
