Default Pizza has a glycemic index of 30+?

So my sister brought home a box of pizza. I stared at it for a while and asked myself If I can eat this. I mean, just looking at the crust makes my glucose rise (kidding!). I closed my eyes and just took a bite.

I took it to my room and I googled "Pizza Glycemic Index" and I was surprised.

Pizza is considered to be a Low GI food. Pizza has 30, apples have 38. So does this mean I can indulge on pizza? Well, not exactly indulge but... eat.

I will check my sugar after 45 min and share my result. If you have any pizza-and-glucose related stories, please do share

I only have ONE pizza-related story .... because I DO NOT eat regular pizza after that one.

Pizza is NOTORIOUS for causing huge, sometimes delayed, spikes.

I do better with cauliflower-crusted pizza. I make a mean one of those -- You mix shredded cauli, lots of mozz, and an egg, and herbs. Can top and slice like a regular pizza. Try googling it.

And good luck with what you ate -- test for a long time after it!

Pizza does raise my blood sugar quite a bit. But it causes the biggest spike 1.5 to 2.5 hours after I eat it. I have to take the bulk of my insulin dosage at that time to cover it. It digests and breaks down into sugar more slowly, thats why it is a lower GI food. Keep checking your blood sugar 2 or 3 hours after you eat it to make sure it isnt giving you a late spike.

I checked right now and it showed 101 like 50 min after I ate it.

I will check again after 2 hours and after 3. I'm actually surprised here.

Thats what it does to me too. My blood sugar actually got low the first time I tried to eat it after I got my pump because i took a dose of insulin like I normally would...then by two hours I was close to 200. Keep checking it to make sure it doesnt give you a big spike later.

Yes I will. BTW, I'm not on a pump. I just took 8 units of basal insulin. 10 units of fast acting insulin at around noon (I just had to eat that friggin cake!) and 2000mg of metformin distributed through the day. It's night time here BTW.

Even when we aren't on the pump, the digestion of the pizza can still cause a rise later than normal. Like if I have pizza for dinner, my after dinner reading will be fine but my fasting reading will be high.

I am nearing the 2 hour mark. I will post my glucose count right after,

OK! I got 122 now. That's after 2 hours. Should I inject now some fast acting insulin?

I have always found pizza to have a modest spike but it lasts a long time.

I get the "fully loaded pizza" if you get a plane or a 1 topping then the crust (wheat) is a larger percentage of the meal, so your likely to go higher than if you get the fully loaded pizza.

I get the meat lovers + bacon+onion+mushroom+green pepper+extra cheese MM MMM good If I dont Bolus up for it I go to 160 or so, but it lasts for hours.
