I've been taking Crestor for months now, and I thought I was home free. The last several weeks I've had the achy, flu-ey, general tiredness, etc and have been waiting for the flu or a cold to join me....hasn't happened....but I'm really tired of all my joints hurting. Anyway remembered seeing all the people who had to quit the statins and double-checked the side effects. Low and behold, these side effects can just show up when they get good and ready. I don't have my last lipid panel handy, but as I remember the #s weren't that terrible. As of today I'm stopping the Crestor. It's time for the quarterly blood draw anyway so I'll see where I land.:pout:Enough whining for now...

Thanks, Shanny....hope you don't have any problems. They just slipped up on me. I think it takes weeks for it to leave my system, so we'll see.

Oh my! What's this about Crestor and achy joints and flu-like symptoms? I'm on the highest level of Crestor, and the reason I found out I have T2 diabetes is because for 4 months now I have been complaining of joint pain! Let me rewind here..........

Back in July I started getting these symptoms of headaches, occasional night sweats, sore throats, extreme fatigue, forgetfulness, and terrible pain in my joints, mainly my ankles, hips and knees. So I go to the doc thinking I'm probably in menopause. Sure fit the symptoms. Anyway, he runs a check on my hormne levels. All is well. Which was NOT what I wanted to here becuse I was like 110% sure that was it! So next he checks my thyroid an again, that was good. Now, I have been on Crestor not quite a year now, and 3 weeks ago my blood test came back on the AC1 test I think it's called. The one that tells you over a 3 month period your BG level. Mine was at 7.4, so here i am learning how to be my own Good 'Well' Ambassador ;) But I still get those aweful joint pains and still feel those flu-like symptoms.....Crestor huh? Interesting indeed. I'll ask the doc at my next visit and check those side effects of it!

Just wish my doc would have thrown that out there as a possible cause........

I'm not a healthcare professional, however I had a similar situation with Crestor. My cholesterol was really high so the doctor started me on Crestor and this was 3 years ago. The high levels came down and I had great lab results. Then one Summer morning about 1-1/2 years ago I woke up feeling like I had the flu. I kept waiting for the inevitable stomach part of the flu - which never happened. However the achy feeling and joint pain escalated to the point where I could barely get out of bed w/o help.

My husband took me to the doctor and he stopped the statin for a month during which time I started to feel better. I returned to the doctor for the month check up and he started me on a different statin. After a few weeks, it was the same achy feeling and joint pain all over again. What followed was a trial and error of other statin drugs all with the same physical symptoms. Eventually I said "No more statins, please". I know they are wonderful for many people and I'm not knocking the statins. But my body has a bad reaction to them.

There is a lot of evidence indicating that statins aren't a good choice, especially for women over 50. I stopped taking crestor in April & my lipid panels is not as good as I'd like it to be.

I am working on improving my trigs so that my HDL/trig ratio will be better. That is all I am concerned about. Trigs have been stubborn for me, but I'm trying harder. I am not drinking any alcohol until Christmastime to see if that helps. I have read that sometimes, even a small amount of alcohol will run them up.

I think I will try CoQ-10, also. It's supposed to help protect the heart.

Lipid panels: Did you know that there is no cholesterol in plants only animal product

I found out that there is only cholesterol in animal protein and that its about the same for all meats and fish. I started switching over to plant proteins like nuts or seeds in my salads or nut pates, mock salmon pates and nut burgers and watched all of my lipid panel improve dramatically without drugs. Wishing you the best, Deborawh

I'm sure there are many who don't experience any side effects....but for me, it's not worth it to keep taking the Crestor....not asking the doctor's permission, just reminding that it's my choice to make. I didn't click to the fact that my hip has been killing me and started pretty much when I had been on crestor for a few months...something to think about, huh?

Good luck and I hope you get to feeling better soon! It is really hard to figure out if you have the flu or a drug reaction to a statin.

My Dad's girlfriend found that Crestor absolutely crippled her. Her reaction was quite strong and it took several months after discontinuing the med for her to recover. I'm not so sure the benefit outweighed the outcome.

Take care Alura - it looks like some statins really are not worth the price.

statins

well i came off of simvastatins,(40mgs) 15 months ago , and my cholestoral has risen to 5.0 (i'm told they like diabetics to be under 4.0)..and it looks like i may have to go back on em:mad:
......i came off em because i was very scared by the side effects.
i had just been diagnosed with kidney cancer (july,09), and was convinced (rightly or wrongly), the statins had contibuted to my cancer, and i was getting a bit depressed , which was not like me, so i stopped taking em.
while on the statins i did notice that 40mgs made my sugar levels higher, yet 20mgs didn't seem to alter them .
and 20mgs did keep my cholestoral levels down , so i will only be taking the 20mgs when i go back on them , which will be the next time i see the diabetic nurse

Another statin defector here. I have familial hypercholesterolemia, so I was on Zetia. I stopped taking it because it made me stupid. Not merely "forgetful," although it did that too. Stupid, as in "walking in front of moving cars without looking." so I stopped taking it. The doc hates my cholesterol numbers, and can't understand why I refuse to take it, even after I explained it to him.
