Default Huh? Scotch lowering my sugar scores???

Ok, still pretty new to this Type 2 situation (dx dec 08)...

but the last two nights I've had business dinners, my score (Canadian mmol) was 10.0 (high for me) going to dinner on both nights and last night, after a scotch and dinner my score dropped to 6.5, and tonight, 1.5 hours after dinner it was 8.5.

Weird eh?

I don't think it was the scotch lowering your glucose level. What meds are you on and when did you take it in relation to checking your glucose. What did you have at those dinners, such as high protein? Also, I think alcohol and metformin can drop your blood sugar, but I think it could drop it dangerously low.

Yeah alcohol has this nasty habit of lowering BG quite well so you see why people get stupid when they drink too much as the lack of BG for the brain to work.
Have a go with the insanely high alcohol drinks and just make sure that there is some high carbs near by.

Hi again,

nothing special for supper, one night was a steak and steamed veggies, the next was salmon and steamed veggies. Took the BG score about 3 hours after eating in both cases.

the only med that's changed actually in the last month has been the quadrupling of dosage of lipitor (it was in normal zone, but Doc said it was normal only for people without diabetes). Other meds include synthroid, lisinopril (blood pressure) which have been unchanged for over 10 years.

I rarely drink alcohol, maybe that's why it had such an impact....

Not realy... Alcohol metabolizes in the body kinda wonky.... read this page for good info.

I know it's for type 1 but it works in type 2 bodies the same.

Hi, the scotch contains a high content of ethanol-the part of of it that makes you drunk. Ethanol is capable of inhibiting hepatic gluconeogenesis, meaning, it will stop converting non glucose material into glucose (glucose is sugar)... Ethanol in part, works similar to the drug glucophage-metformin, but not the extent that it does.

Type II diabetics are believed to have increased activity at the hepatic output level (basically meaning you convert non glucose material into glucose more often than other people). The ethanol stopped this temporarily, thus dropping your blood sugar.
