Hi everyone

I'm new here but since my first post will also be a question, I decided to post it here instead of the "introduction" forum.

First of all, i'd like to say that the idea of this forum is really nice, I'll be able to get informations and answers about diabetes, and I like to know stuff.

I am however, not diabetic, but my boyfriend is (he has also epileptic, but controlled, he didn't have a seizure in years) , we've been living together for a little over a year now so I was able to see the ups and down, he's more stable than when we first started dating thats for sure, he knows I worry ^^; (even after a year its still worrying me sometime) I know usually it's people who have to deal with this personally that comes here, but he doesn't really have the time and he's not the most computer savvy person there is.

Now however, we are planning to have kids, in a few month, I am stopping the pills. But he's scared that his kids will have to deal with diabetes as well, we both know it's something that we can deal with, but we're also not sure and it's a pretty delicate situation.

Is there a lot of chance that the babies will grow up to have type 1? Is there even any way to know?

We could ask our doctors, but we live in a province where family doctors are scarce and it takes months, sometime up to a year to have an appointment (which we have, but it's in October) we're both not really interested having to wait all those times to have some answers, so I figured I'll ask the good ol' web

Hello Gen: Welcome to you!

You must know that even perfectly healthy wealthy People(usually the Female) worry about what will happen if they have Kids. You and your BoyFriend are not alone. I worried also. My Hubby didn't seem to.

Unfortunately, no one can predict whose future off-spring will or will not become Diabetic. If the Woman is the Diabetic, there is about a 4% chance that one or more of her Kids will become a Diabetic. That's not a big number. If the Man is the Diabetic, the chances double. So there is about an 8% chance that one or more of the Kids will become a Diabetic. Still low but more of a chance.

You should think hard before you decide. I can't believe it took you that long before you see a doctor...Geez. It is wise to live in or close to Big city, especially if you become pregnant.

Neither of my Parents or Grandparents had Diabetes but my 2 Brothers and I got it young. My Sister did not. My 2 Kids don't have Diabetes nor does my youngest Brother's Kids or any of the other Kids in our immediate Family(touch wood). I'm Glad that your BoyFriend is in control most of the time.

hehe the funny thing, we live in Montreal, the major city in Quebec, the thing is... Our healthcare system sucks :P

as for him being in control, well I've been reading around a bit here, and he's not that much controled, he usually waits too long before taking his insulin. I'm glad my dog wakes us up when hes unstable now (no idea why, he started doing that when he was just a little 4 months old pup, he smells it I guess, I just trained him to do it all the time now ^^) Id like him to at least try, but he works a lot and I guess its his choice -_-;

Well, medical Professionals are lacking around the world. Actually, I just heard on the news here that they sent a little Boy with brain cancer from CHEO to the Hospital in Montreal. They must have a Unit there specifically for that trauma.

Yes, some dogs and cats seem to automatically know when a Diabetic is low. And they whine around the Person and lick them until they wake up.

Too bad you aren't on this side of the Ottawa River. You may have heard that Insulin Pumps and supplies are free for Insulin dependant Diabetics here. Perhaps your Province will be next for the pumps. That could help your BoyFriend. For now he has to learn and understand about Diabetes, how his Insulin, exercise, foods, stress, etc., etc., affect him. Then he would be better at it. Always being on the run is not Good for a Diabetic. I hope he's not on N.P.H. Insulin. It affects most(not all)Diabetics badly because of the peaks.
