Hi,

I am a healthy, athletic, normal weight 35 year old and have just been diagnosed with Diabetes. I am confused. It never crossed my mind that I would have this when I eat so well and am so active. I thought diabetes only happend to overweight people. Can you please explain this to me?

Thank you!
Jen

Hello Jen, welcome to our support group! It depends on what kind of diabetes you have. I am type 1 and I became very ill when I was 5 years old and the illness caused my pancreas to stop producing insulin. I was very skinny and underweight when diagnosed in 1945. Anything that damages your pancreas can cause type 1 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body is still producing insulin but is not able to utilize that insulin effectively. That is called insulin resistance. Being overweight can cause the body to have that resistance but there are other causes of resistance like the side effects of some medications. Most overweight people do not become diabetics. There is much more to it than what I have said. I suggest that you use a search engine like Google and research this topic. Google "Causes of diabetes" and see what you find.

Richard

Nope, it can happen to anyone, overweight or not. Keep up with your healthy life style, it will help you in the long run. Does anyone in your family have diabetes, (Mother, Father, Aunt, Uncle, Cousins) anyone, it can be hereditary.

See an endo, if you don't already. They specialize in diabetes. I'm sure that your GP is good, if that's who diagnosed you, but they don't specialize in diabetes. A good endo will tell you what you need to know about the disease, just ask him/her.

Oh, and B-T-W, Hello, and welcome to the board. Feel free to ask anything here too.

Smile Welcome & Sorry.

Hello & Welcome to DF. First of all buy just having diagnosed is a kick in the butt. But all is not lost. Let me blow one myth out of the water!!! Diabetics can have sugar!! But the real enemy is Carbohydrates. So I would look at getting a book about this but that don't stop you from any carbs as you just have to count it. There are many Low Carbers here and having sucsess in keeping the wight off. There is one thing that's in your favor is the fact you are active and healthy. Carbs and exercise go hand in hand. Monitoring is now your life!! and try and keep the happy medium. Have a look around the forums here and you will become well informed.
