Unhappy New, scared and sad.

Hello everyone, it's nice to meet you. Well, a little about me, and please don't take this the wrong way or think I'm a downer, I'm just really really sad and scared. I'm 43, well over 300lbs, and was diagnosed as type 2 last week. I was pre-diabetic and thought I had it under control but now for some reason it's just that I cna't bring my numbers down. I'm on 1000mg of metformin x2 per day and have been told to go on the exchange diet. I've done it before and I know it works. I lost a lot fo weight on it before, too, and then gained it back. In fact, I lost 100lbs on it in 6 or 7 months. I tried Atkins, which did bring down my sugar levels but I really don't like meat all that much and the fat levels made me sick. I'm going back to the exchanges and seeing how I do then.

I'm just feeling really alone and useless right now. My hubby is sweet, but doesn't get how hard this is. He himself could use to lose a good 70lbs. TO him it should be as easy as simply not eating and getting out and getting exercise. I also have PCOS, so there ya go. I work to support us while he works part time. That's not his fault, it's just the type of work he does. Me, I work 10hrs a day in a sit down job and I'm so tired by the end of the day, I can't exercise. I know, excuses.

I've got diabetes through out my family and amputations are "in style" with several relatives, including blindness. It's that bad. I know it's going to happen to me if I don't be careful.

I'm generally a very happy supportive relaxed person, so this entire downer of an introduction is just me venting. I'm really sorry. I hope to get to know you all and help anyone I can if the occasion arises.

Hi Lesley: Good to see Ya and Welcome.

I'm sorry to hear that you were dxd. with Diabetes. Certainly no
one blames you for being scared and sad. It's a normal reaction
and you have every right. Hopefully you will be able to go through
the process successfully to become Happy and whole again.

Congrats on losing that much weight in the past with the exchange
diet. That is a Good way to go with the help of your dietician.
Keeping all your parts, eye sight and Life for that matter should be
the Best motivation, of course. I can't agree with the Atkin's diet
though. Too much meat and fat is not good for anyone, let alone
Diabetics since we have to take care of our kidneys and heart. And
you know what happened to Mr. Atkins. Everything in moderation. It
can't be said often enough.

Default Hello Lesley!

You are taking meds and dieting. The missing ingredient is exercise. I know you are tirede but I think it will be absolutely necessary for you to get good control. Type 2 diabetics who do not lose weight and do not get good control usually have to take insulin injections. Not that is a bad thing, not at all. I have used insulin for 62 years and I am very healthy with good control. If you can lose the weight and get the control you may never have to use insulin.

I eat only 150 carbs per day. I hope you count carbs. I exercise at least 5 days per week. Exercise in addition to my daily routine, on a treadmill or walking outdoors. You need to keep track of your blood sugar and so you need to run some tests with your glucose meter. Do you do that? You need to know what foods to avoid. Testing two hours after meals will help with that.

Good luck to you!

Richard

Hi Lesley,

I found out that I was diabetic around the same time that you found out so I know how you are feeling at the moment. I know how difficult it is to excersie when you are so overweight, I was over 300 pounds up until a short while ago. There is a video out by a lady who lost a leg due to cancer, she made the fitness video for amputees and very overweight people who cannot excerise standing up. Go into Amazon and type in "Leanne Grose" and see what comes up.
