I've never participated in anything like this before but am at a point where I feel I need to be communicating with people that have the same situation I do. I have been a Type 1 diabetic for 19 years. I didn't actually get it until I was 26 so, although this was unusual, I'm grateful I made it through childhood without it. I live in Stafford, VA, currently. My family and I just made a cross-country move from Tucson, AZ to VA. We're getting settled and it's quite beautiful here. I also found an endo that seems very good too. I left an excellent one in Tucson so was a bit concerned about that. I want to get involved in volunteering for an organization that works with Type 1 diabetics, particularly children. I'll do some searching online but if anyone has any suggestions, I'll take them! I look forward to chatting with all of you and sharing ideas and experiences.

Hello Callie:
![]() Yes, I know what you mean. I hadn't spoken to any other Type 1's really about Diabetes for the first 38 years after being dxd. since there was none in our area. My 2 Brother's were dxd. young also but we never discussed Diabetes. I'm not sure why. We were just expected to accept it I guess and go on. When we got our computer, I didn't realize there were any Diabetes discussion sites either for the first couple years. And there weren't too many. Actually, being dxd. at age 26 is not unusual any more. Congrats on your 19th yr. Anniversary. I'm so Glad that you've found an Endo who is Good. That's Good of you to want to be a volunteer for Type 1 Children. You could check out if there is an American Diabetes Association Home Page or Type 1 Diabetes: Dedicated to Finding a Cure : Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International branch in your city. They could advise you. children with DIABETES Online Community may have a branch near you. It will soon be time for the Folks at Diabetic Camps for Kids to be looking for Volunteers or Counsellors. Your Hospital may have a Diabetes Children's ward or if your city is bigger it could have a Pediatric Hospital with a Diabetes ward. You could also be a Big Sister to a Diabetic Girl or even 2, if that is available in your area. Volunteers are always needed and appreciated. Welcome! ![]() Last edited by Terrie : 04-09-2008 at 04:39 AM. |
