Introduction

Hello,
I am new to this site. I've found it to be very helpful. My 9 year old daugther was diagnosed in October with type 1 diabetes. This came as a total shock to us. One weekend she woke up just totally out of it, so we took her to the emegency room and next thing we know she was being transferred to another hospital that specializes in diabetes. She was in ICU for 2 days her sugar level was over 380 when she was admitted to the emergency room. She stayed in the hospital for 4 days. I had to get a crash course in carb counting and insulin injections and everything else that comes along with diabetes. It's been a very long and sometimes frustrating process but what can I say it's the hand that was dealt us. I just know that we will do whatever necessary to make sure that she is healthy & that diabetes will not hinder her in any way.

what a wonderful name your daughter has: Lolo! That's just so cute!
I'm sorry to hear though, that Lolo is now also one of us. It's no fun to get diagnosed diabetic. I can imagine you people being in shock.
How is Lolo coping?
But you're a mom and you'll do just fine. Moms would do anything for their children.

Thank you,
Lolo is actually her nickname, when she was a baby her brother would call her lolo and it stayed that way. Julissa is her given name. She is coping just fine, it amazes me how she has taken the initiative to take care of herself. She checks her blood sugar several times a day, she has learned to draw & inject her insulin by herself. I'm just very grateful that she wants to learn how to handle her diabetes. She's a trooper.

She definitely is a trooper

Wow, I'm impressed how small children accept this condition and move on. Sometimes they cope better than we do.
Julissa is a very nice name as well. I have never heard it before; It sounds like Julie and Melissa in one.

WOW!! That's good start.
Meurtelken, I agree that Lolo is a nice name and welcome to our helpful site. I see that you have gotten on to carbohydrate counting which is good practice as I have done a course to get to understand to match insulin to food and DAFNE has done that for me as a very good guide.

Yes I find that children are very good learners and give them a computer and you will soon catch on very quickly.

Welcome to our community! You will probably take wonderful care of Lolo just like my mother did for me. I was diagnosed with Type 1 in 1945 when I was 6. I have now been diabetic for 63 years and I am very healthy. My mother is responsible for getting me through my early years. You will do the same for Lolo. I just want you to know that with good control Lolo will have a good chance of living a long, healthy life. Good luck to both of you!

Welcome to the forum.. Lolo is lucky to have such a wonderful mother that cares and wants to see her be healthy. The advances in diabetes have come such a long way.. My father was diagnosed at around 18 months and I was diagnosed as a type I in Feb of 2008. It does take some getting use to and grasping all the knowledge that you can only helps.. It is great to hear that she is pro-active in her diabetic life.. that will only benefit her as she gets older.. once again Welcome
