Hi! My name is Anne,I'm 62 years young and was recently diagnosed with Type 2. I was given the meter, told not to eat anything white and that was it. I have never felt so alone in my life. I immediately stopped sugar and everything white. I also started the Atkins diet and am down 21 lbs. I need support and advice. I did research to find out what my sugar should be at and am waiting to see a specialist.

Welcome Anne!!

this site is especially good for people like you that didn't get enough information to manage this disease well.

There will be folks by to give you some informative links that you can review and it will help you understand what you have and what you can do about it.

some questions if you want to dig a little deeper...

What are your BG numbers ? Before meals? After Meals?
Did they give you any medication? if so, what ?
How is your diet? lets us know a typical day. you will be surprised what you can remove or substitute in your diet that will make a HUGE difference.

Most importantly .... ASK QUESTIONS!! nothing is a silly question. ask as many questions as you want. We will listen and there are many folks who will be able to answer just about anything.

Know you are NOT alone. We are all fighting the same disease and we are all here to help each other.

Welcome to the cool kids club!!! no more lonely thoughts anymore Anne...

Basically please post you Glucose like HFTMROCK said

but monitor you sugar intake and Carb intake (50 each)

basically I stay under 50 carbs for breakfast and diner

but lunch I usually don't eat more than 20

sugars pretty much the same for me, I keep them LOW
Whole Wheat bread is good, I usually eat no more than two slices with my sandwich
but NOT all wheat is made the same, so look at the carbs and sugars
fruits are high in sugars, eat very little
remember tomatoes are fruits...lol

sea food is great if you like

Salads, proteins, like eggs, meats and beans are what I mostly eat
just remember too much meat clogs arteries...

some of this is debatable....

No sugar is good but some are unavoidable

Whole wheat is not that good for a diabetic in many many cases

depending on what/how she eats, will determine how to proceed.

I do not eat any real carbs (I know I do but 99% of them are in my vegetables only). I eat only 30g of carbs per day. I do not take meds or insulin

and I do not believe meat clogs arteries... I make sure I eat fatty meat wherever I can. 75% fat, 20 % protein, 5% carbs is the way I go (Not recommended for everyone.)

I would like to wait until Anne replies before we point her in a direction. Too many variables at the moment

Congratulations on your progress! The fact that you weren't given a lot of advice initially, might have been a blessing in disguise because so many of us got advice initially that wasn't very effective. I have a feeling you are going to like it around here.

Grab a cup of coffee and jump on in!

My story is similar to yours. I also started Atkins diet immediately after diagnosis. By the time I saw the diabetes educator two weeks later at my doctor's office, my BG was down around 140 in the office. After a couple months I had lost 25 lbs. and my BG was even lower - even after meals.

My diet now is still very similar to the Atkins - although after I learned how well people here did with low-carb/high-fat, I increased my fats and have had excellent numbers ever since. The LCHF way of eating is very satisfying, as well.

I don't know any other diabetics who are keeping their blood sugar in control - other than those on this forum. It's a good place for support and encouragement.

Hi Anne, welcome to the forum. For more learning about diabetes, check out Bloodsugar101. It is very informative and most everything told there is backed up with links to studies that overwhelmingly support what is told.

You are not alone, as you will find out, reading others intro posts. Most of us here have found out that our doctors, and even some "specialist" are still practicing the treatment of diabetics following the recommendations of the ADA (American Diabetes Association) and for many here it has failed horribly at controlling their BG.

In Bloodsugar101, you will learn that to really get a grip on controlling it, you will need to "eat to your meter". We are all different and what works for some does not work for all. One thing common for all of us is that we should let our meter tell us what we can eat, can't eat, or maybe we can eat something, but in smaller portions.

As for me, I try to eat less than 30 grams of net carbs per day, yes per day. That would be equivalent to the 2 slices of whole wheat bread that Contra eats. Some are lucky and can get by doing that, some like me, are not.

As far as specialists, hope you get a good one, but remember, your doctor is working for you and it is up to you to make the final decision if you follow his/her recommendations or not.

Again, welcome, come here often, read a lot, knowledge is the key, and as you read and ask questions, you will learn we all felt alone and very lost when we were diagnosed. For many, including me, finding out about having diabetes may have very well been a life saver and led me to being much healthier than before, despite my rebellious ways of not always following the doctors orders.

Yes I have lost 20 ish lbs. and I'm trying to get my Blood sugar stabilized. I am at an average of 7.2 but I need to get down to 4-6.
