- Your experiences with diabetes
- Naturally, diabetes has influenced and shaped my life from a young age. The treatment advancements made since I was diagnosed have impressed me tremendously. Not only has my lifestyle been influenced, but my identity and my career choice have been moulded based on my experience with diabetes and the treatment most patients with diabetes receive. I've never viewed the disease as a burden - its been more of a challenge that I don't mind tackling every day. Granted, there have been some downers but for some reason, my mind has been set to not let a disease control me, rather let me control the disease. I've experienced many diabetes-related mentalities, from depression to extreme anorexia nervosa, and have fortunately emerged complication free and with better insight into the incredible complexity that this disease presents. Now as I begin my career as a physician, my experiences endow me with better insight into my patients' mentalities and their experiences.
Currently my top 2 favorite new things in diabetes are the Dexcom CGM (though I had significant issues with it at first, I can't imagine living without it) and pramlintide (Symlin) which has had a tremendous impact on my post-prandial spikes! I'm optimistic for the future of diabetes care and hope that the national push for a socialized health care system doesn't jeopardize these advancements for us as it has in other countries with socialized medicine.
