- Date of Birth:
- September 5
- Biography:
- I have been a professional trumpet player all my life, but recently due to declining eyesight have had to stop performing. I now enjoy teaching at the University of Southampton and passing on my experience to the next generation of performers.
- Location:
- Southampton UK
- Your experiences with diabetes:
- I have had Type 1 diabetes for about 28 years and I am able to keep my blood glucose levels quite well controlled these days. In a sense I am very fortunate as I don't suffer from neuropathy, high blood pressure or cholesterol levels. However, I have had a lot of problems with diabetic retinopathy over the past few years. In spite of lots of laser treatment and steroid injections into my eyes these problems are ongoing, and it is now getting to the stage when I am not sure for how much longer I will be able to drive.
But I am not giving up hope, as in the time that I have had diabetes the treatment has changed and improved beyond measure, certainly as far as eye care is concerned. There seems to be some new discovery every time I visit my eye consultant. I have discovered that the answer is to be positive about everything and keep those blood glucose levels as low as possible all the time!
