- Biography:
- I'm a special education teacher at a residential facility for at risk youth. I'm originally from Mississippi, but I now live in Connecticut. I'm 31 years old. I've been teacher for 7 years. I've been a diagnosed diabetic for 5 years. Type 1 or Type 2? That's to be determined.... Being African American and overweight tips the scales toward the latter, but my onset (weight loss and needing insulin immediately) was much like a Type 1.

- Your experiences with diabetes:
- I use Novolog and Levemir to control my diabetes. Before I can go on oral meds, my doctor has to verify that I am indeed type 2. They're afraid of lactic acidosis in case I use Glucophage. Diabetes made me pretty bitter seemingly cutting short the fun of my 20s. However, at 31, I'm regaining much of my hopefulness and positivity. Never underestimate the power of positivity to get you going. Having battled depression (and still am), I know from experience.
