Default Off and on foot pain.

Back in the mid 80's my left heel was shattered. The joint was fussed and I have just up and down motion with it but I have an alignment problem and walk on the little toe side of my left foot. It gave me trouble for many years until I lost enough feeling in my feet from D. My right leg has done most of the work since the mid 80's. A year ago a pressure sore on my right heel got away from me and I had a good chunk of my right heel removed to the bone. I did not feel any pain with the injury and have not needed pain meds for either of my feet until about a month ago. I lost 80 lbs. and decided I need to exercise about 2.5 months ago. I have walked every day except for two days I was out shoveling snow. About a month ago I had pain that would come and go at the base of my right big toe. It kept me awake one night. It seems worse without my shoe on as some pressure seems to help. The next day the pain lessened and I had no more trouble until 2 weeks ago. It came back and again kept me up all night the first night. The next day it worsened instead of getting better. I called and made an appointment with my podiatrist but could not be seen till the next day. I did not want to go another night without sleep and took several of the pain pills from the un-opened bottle form last years hospital stay. I slept until the pain pills wore off and when I awoke the pain was still there but much lesser. I was worried I had done some really bad damage to something walking and could not feel it and this was secondary pain. X-rays were taken. I had a blood test last year and the x-ray confirmed I did not have rheumatoid arthritis. So the podiatrist shot a number of injections into my right big toe. I think it was cortisone. I could not feel anything when he gave me the shots. I was told I could do my normal walk but warned to not try to go too fast and for me to either come back or check in with him in 2 weeks. The shots seemed to work. Not enough pain to keep me awake at night. It was 2 weeks last Friday and I will contact him tomorrow. The pain returned this afternoon but it is in a new location. Before it was on the top of my food and was in the area just behind my big toe. Now it is on the bottom and seems to be larger along my instep.

The pain is sharp and lasts a few seconds and then is gone for 10-30 seconds. Sometimes it will not occur for about a minute or so and as the pain becomes more severe it seems to happen more often. Shorter times between stabs and bit longer duration. Does anyone have this type pain and if so what is the cause. I take 300 mg of Gabapentin twice a day for neuropathy. My A1c's have been great for about 6months now and I am getting some of the feeling back in my feet but still have a long way to go. Just wanted to get some more info for I contact the podiatrist again tomorrow. Not sure if the shot worked or if this pain just keeps happening every 2 weeks. Sorry to be so long winded.
