Default Vision issues

Two weeks ago my BG was over 500. Since then I have been working to get my BG back to normal. Between meds and a strict low carb diet I am finally seeing my BG under 200 again. The lingering effects are some foot neuropathy issues, and vision problems.

Both of these issues bother me, but my vision problems are the most distressing at the moment. I am struggling with double vision, which is making reading almost impossible.
Today I was preaching at church and had to increase the font to 16 on my sermon so that I could make out the blurry words on my notes.

I see my PCP on Tuesday hoping that we can find good long term issues to my BG control issues, and hopefully with my my vision and neuropathy issues.

I was wondering how many other people have struggled with vision issues related to their diabetes, and how long if ever did it take their vision to return to normal after they were able to get their BG back in the normal range.

I am the general manager for a construction contracting business, so reading is something I do all the time. And now I couldn't read the menu at dinner with my wife last night.

Like you my blood sugars were over 500. I cannot stress the importance of seeing a opthalomogist. I had no blurry vision. The vision issues I thought were from cataracts. Turns out I had prolerilific retinopathy. I had a laser procedure in the right eye and got my blood sugars down (a1c 9.5) and the macula edema disappeared. the retinopathy is not an issue but it doesn't go away, you can just control it. however it took insulin to get it down, and I'm not controlled yet. It has been a year.

For the vision issues, seeing an eye is a good idea to check for damage.

But don't spend money on a new scrip. If you can get your BG to normal levels, under 140, then your vision issues should clear up within a few weeks. Just be patient. Mine took a couple months to straighten out but I was way higher than you at DX.

Oh yes, vision!! Scary!!

I was 550 at dx. Every time I took insulin and my BS moved I had blurry vision. I said it was kind of like a veil over my eyes. It took months to get back to normal but it has been now. I was diagnosed in April 2014. If my BS moves low fast, I can still get a mild case. My Dr said when your BS changes your blood vessels constrict and dilate. Once you stabilize it will get better but you do have to stabilize and the only way to do that is LCHF. You have to find the best insulin doses for your meals and take as little insulin as possible to regulate it.

I sure wish I had found this forum months ago. I thought that was going to be for the rest of my life and wondering how I was going to live like that. I don't and won't.. it does take some time though. Do the best you can

Yesterday I picked up some reader glasses so that I can read a little better. These lenses are over twice as strong as my normal ones. Still concerned about my long term vision, but at least I can function.
I see my PCP today, vision will be a big discussion

I have read many posts over the years of those whose vision was blurry when their BG was high, and whose vision cleared when their BG stabilized at a more normal level.

Don't get too stressed out over this. Use the reading glasses while you are working on your BG management but in time you won't need them.

Please let us know how it goes.

I am very concerned about you running around with levels over 500 mg/dl.

Still working on my BG and trying to get tighter control.
My A1c was 12, so my BG had been high for a lot longer then I thought.

Currently still taking oral meds, metformin and glipizide.
My FBG is holding in the 170's and my pre meal numbers are in the 120's

My eyes are still not getting any better, I see my eye doc on Tuesday. Currently using a +2.0 to see and a +3.0 to read.
I used to be able to read most things without my glasses, not now.

Your eyes probably won't get better with fluctuating BS. Keep plugging away and give it time. Not only does it have to come down but stay down. This is why I like tight control and steady numbers. Even now when it fluctuate too much it messes with my vision.. Time....heals

You know, some years back I noticed I had 'good' eye days and then I'd have a day come along when I'd notice a day when they weren't so good. I asked my eye doctor at my annual check up if that was normal and he said it was. Now, I wonder if that was a BG involvement.
