Default My swirling tornado is picking up stuff

I went to the poditrist this afternoon. It was my 2 week check up from the partial removal of an ingrown tonail. It is healing but not very fast. He put me on another round of antibiotics. This is will be my 4th round for my toes.

While I was there I explained that I had been diagnosed with diabetes since the partial removal. Again, we discuss the pain that I have been having in my feet for a while. About a week ago it had gotten so bad that it hurt to walk for any distance. This is something he was going to address after getting the toenails finished not knowing that I had diabetes. But today, he ran a few tests and came to the conclusion that I have a slight case of neuropathy. 'Slight' might be a word I would decribe for today but NOT what have felt several time lately. I will be going back see him in two weeks for both the toes and update on the feet. He did not want to start any medicine at this point as the diabetic nurse and doctor have just started. (Just diagnosied two weeks ago tomorrow)

I realize that the doctors will help with the long term stuff and that my counts need to be undercontrol. I guess my question is does any one have any suggestions for "the bad days"?

I am so sorry for what you're going through right now. Rest assured everyone who lives long enough has to deal with some sort of tornado now and then. So, take comfort in knowing that you are not alone. Know that this, too, shall pass and there will be brighter days in your future. Those thoughts always help me, so maybe they will work for you.

If you are asking for specifics on how to deal with the pain in your feet, I would try to stay as comfortable as possible by using some sort of pain medication and by keeping my feet elevated as much as possible. I haven't deal with your specific feet issues, but I have had to recover from multiple broken bones in the past (broken collar bone, ankles, shin, elbow) and surgery & radiation for Cancer. So, I've had my share of "bad days." Take it one day at a time, and if that seems like it's too much, then take it one hour or one minute at a time.

Being on antibiotics sometimes raises our blood sugar, but if you're eating as few carbs as possible, maybe that will offset the antibiotics. For sure the sooner your blood sugar comes down & stabilizes, the sooner your feet/toes will heal. High blood sugar makes healing - especially of extremities - really difficult, so getting your numbers down needs to be a priority all the way around. I'm so sorry you have this to endure - good that you were seeing a podiatrist already.

It might be worth it for you to read about L-Arginine and Alpha Lipoic Acid. I had a MRSA infection that would not heal on my shin. After several days of taking the above supps the healing started and continued until it was entirely gone. They both help with neuro problems as well.

The slow healing may be due to D, or may be due to antibiotic resistance. LOTS of things heal more slowly, these days.

Just make sure it is fully healed -- it should NOT be something you will have to deal with all the time once you get your BGs under control. Chin up -- it's does not mean the start a life sentence of infections.

Since you are a newly dx'd diabetic, the first thing you need to do is get your bgs under control. Could you tell us how high your bgs or your HbA1c is. This could be the cause of your slow healing and the neuropathy. I had a lot of it before diagnosis. I would get it in my legs and feet and thought I was just over exercising. When I was dx'd I found my fastings to be 240. So I can just imagine how high my after meal bgs were. Any bgs over 140 could cause serious side effects like neuropathy. As I lowered my bgs the symptoms did disappear but reimmerge whenever my bgs creep up.

Thanks for all the responses.

I am attempting to eat what I think I should be. I meet with the nutritionist on Thursday. Not sure what my counts were before diagnosis but since then I have been eating salads and tuna for most meals. My a1c is 8.3. The count has been ranging from 166 to 110. The average would be about 145.

This afternoon I read about L-Arginine and Alpha Lipoic Acid as suggested. Not really sure about the L-Arginine as numerous websites gave warnings against it when someone has diabetes. But the Alpha Lipoic Acid did look like something that might ask about on Thursday.

Do anyone know of a lotion or something of that nature that helps with the pain? or what about acceptable foods that might help? Are there any 'home remedies' have people found that help them? What about specific excerises or movements that might help?

I understand that everyone is different and what works for one person might not for someone else. I am just looking for ideas to try. I keep them elevated when at home but not during the day. I teach junior high math and because of technology, I am able to sit down a bit more than I did when I taught elementary.

Interestingly, I am not sure when I developed diabetes BUT as I was reading about neuropathy I did not realize that there were different types and one could affect your digestive system. This is interesting since in 2008, I had a terrible time holding any food down. The result was two sperate hospital stays (one week in July and another in October). The doctors could NEVER figure out what the problem was. Since that time I still get sick at times. Ho well, who no knows if an of that is related but it does make me wonder.

I am not a doctor or trying to talk you into anything but the L-Arginine gave me a slight bump in my BG when I first started taking it but that soon supsided. I took it in the evening I tolerated it much better than in the mornings. I had neuro pretty bad in the begining, so much so I could barely drive a car, hands hurt so bad.

There are lotions, Rx from a doctor. They have L-Arginine, Ketoprofen, Lidocaine in a base that can be absorbed thru the skin. They also can make it with opiod in it as well.
