Default heating pad - NOT on feet - causes neuropathy flare?

I know this is going to sound very strange, but here goes...

I have diabetic neuropathy in both feet. However, I also have chronic hives. Now, because of the hives I usually wear a t-shirt and shorts. However, I get COLD. So, I grabbed a heating pad and used it just on my body away from my feet. The problem is that the neuropathy flared right up. I'm still not warm but my feet have that icy/hot feeling that I get.

I take gabapentin - 200 mg in the morning and 300 mg at night - and as long as my feet are cold, it works. As soon as my feet get warm, the prickling, icy/hot, stabbing feeling starts up. I have learned to keep cold water in the tub so I can just sit on the side of the tub and soak my feet until they calm down.

1st question - does this happen to anyone else?
2nd - what do you do ?
3rd - My doctor has prescribed anodyne therapy - has any one tried this?
4th - does anodyne therapy use heat?
5th - does anyone use a TENS unit? Has it helped you?

Anodyne therapy is an infra-red light treatment. It might be worth a try as many people find it works for them. It does work for me.

TNS machines aren't for everyone, they work for some, disguising the pain by interrupting the nerve pathways with electricity, but make others nauseas due to the pulsing. (I'm one of the people who suffer from rampant nausea)

Work on getting your blood sugars in normal range. After 2 years of taking gabapentin finally got off of it. So the best thing you can do for your feet, is control your blood sugars.

I have this same feeling in my feet! It never really bothers me except sometimes at night. I have a lotion, Vaseline Cooling Lotion for Men! I rub it on the bottoms of my feet as I go to bed, on nights where they are bothering me. It works for me, stops the burning feeling. I also, have always slept with my feet sticking out of the covers....

I do have to use a heat pad on my neck many nights, do to a neck injury I got when I was a kid. It now has arthritis in the area and cause neck pain when I lay down. The heat pad helps on nights when it is bad. I have never had my feet bother me when I was using the heat pad. If my feet are bothering me, I know it before I get in bed.
