Default Diabetic and sick

I know that being sick makes the blood sugar go up and I know that being a diabetic makes any sickness harder to get over. What has been your experience with this?

I'm sick with a cold (9 days now) and my blood sugar is running about 80 points higher than usual and I'm behaving myself regarding what I eat.

Hope you recover soon! I have not really tracked days when I was ill; something to keep in mind when it does happen to me.

Feel better!

Best,

I know when I don't feel well -- or even am suffering a strained joint or such -- that my BG readings go up, usually by around 20-30 points. I just kind of deal with it, knowing it goes down again once I feel better (I also note the illness in my BG-tracking spreadsheet so I remember).

For instance, the family recently endured a stomach/GI thing that's going around our city. Didn't eat much of anything for three days. My FBG the morning I woke up sick was 145 (~20-25 points above normal; poked twice to make sure).

By the time the illness had passed (me), my FBG was 98. It's rarely that low. In fact, I spent all of yesterday under 100. I'm still tired from whatever it was, but at least I've got some low numbers to compensate for that 145!

Hope you feel better soon, chargette!

I went through a period years ago where I kept getting upper respiratory infections, and they always got bad enough that I had to take heavy antibiotics to get over them. Yes my BS went up similar to yours............but

I found out later that a new drug my doctor put me on for my diabetes was causing these infections. Januvia was the culprit, when I found out about this side affect, I verified it with my Pharmacists and got off of it for good. I never saw any improvement in my BS from taking Januvia, and when I got off these infections stopped! That was over 7 years ago, and I have not had even a chest cold since.....BEWARE OF BAD DRUGS.....!
