Default Sugar and Alcohol

I am pre-diabetic, have been on a sugar-free, grain-free diet for almost 3 months and have improved a great deal. Recently I have been experimenting. I have been able to add a 1/2 cup potatoes or rice with a meal without any rise in my glucose levels. I have even been able to have granola with less than 15 carbs per seving and have been fine.

Just this week, wanting to see what ice cream would do after having consumed alcohol, I tested my glucose levels and I was fine. So then I tried having a small soda (another day) from a restaurant.....with the ice it was probably no more than 10 ounces. That was not a good thing to do. I did not have my meter with me but my vision blurred, motion became too fast, my feet started hurting nd I was getting pins and needles pain in my feet and hands. This lasted for several hours.

My question is, my body does not seem to have a reaction to the sugar if I have alcohol in my system. I have read that it is because the body concentrates on eliminating the alcohol from our system. However, is the sugar still causing the body damage, or is it being processed differently and therefore does not cause the rise that is harmful?
