I'm pre-diabetic and eat 60-80 carbs a day. However, the big problem with me seems to be how many I eat at once.

For breakfast, I eat about 10. Then I have a snack of about 10. Then I have about 10 for lunch. Then a snack of about 10. All of that is fine.

However, at dinner it's often 30 or more. At 40, I can expect numbers in the 150s-160s. At 50, it goes anywhere from 160s to over 200.

(My doctor uses A1c and fasting glucose to diagnose diabetes. The last time she did an A1c, it was 5.9. My fasting was 107. Therefore, even though I go over 140 quite often, and even over 200, she doesn't consider me diabetic because the numbers don't stay high.)

I have been shooting for under 50 carbs daily. I've recently re-dedicated myself to the LC lifestyle when my doctor suggested that 20 mg. of glipizide might help me. Eek! I have been taking 10 mg. along with 2000 mg. of metformin.

I'm still trying to find the right spot as far as carbs. I bought and read blood sugar 101 and I'm really eating to the meter to try to see what works. So far, with the approximate 50 carbs daily I've cut the glipizide to 5 mgs. daily and managed to keep my FBS around 100-110 and post-meal well under 140. I'd like to dump the glipizide altogether, but we'll see as time goes on.

I think you're wise in wanting to dump the Glipizide . . . it is helping to burn out your beta cells even faster than they were dying to begin with. Once all your beta cells are gone, you'll be insulin-dependent.

I'm on Glipizide, too, and after reading what y'all have said, I want off of it!!

I was getting a little worried b/c my numbers weren't coming down after several days of eating LC, but I am now seeing numbers I am happier with. Before lunch today I was 94 and after lunch was 110!! So I am seeing improvement!! Very motivational!!!

I can't just drop the Glipizide b/c it is combined with the metformin. So when I have used up all that (I think I have another 2-3 weeks worth) I will insist on only metformin.

Anyone know if you can just stop taking the Glipizide or do you have to wean off it?

I'd like to know that too. The days I've tried to go entirely without the glipizide, I get nervous because I think my BS is too high.

26 grams per day which is 5% of my total calories. I am 20 days off insulin and controlling my T2D by diet. I am usually within 10 grams of this one way or the other.

Between 5 and 10% of total calories, absolute amount irrelevant. I can eat anywhere between 1000 and 4000 calories in any one day, so counting absolute quantity of carbs wouldn't mean much.
