Default dairy products

Hi

I would like to ask about dairy products, Generally, milk is for babies, and from what i have read it seems, we don't need dairy products as we get older.

Now i know the right kinds of dairy will bring BS down which is great for diabetics, i mean what else do we eat if we cant eat this and cant eat that, but just because some foods lower BS does that mean they are totally healthy overall.

I would not rule out high-fat dairy. I eat cream, butter, and high-fat cheeses.

And I just had a lovely big chunk of Havarti cheese for b'fast. High fat/good calcium/low carb. I just have to have my cheese, full fat cream and butter every day!

hehe i understand you all like dairy products just wondering if we should be eating it as adults, i have read sportsman stopping the consumption of dairy products and improving in their sport.

I eat butter, cheese and use heavy cream. As for drinking milk I leave that to baby cows for which it is intended

Dairy is a lot of very different things. For starters, three main players are butter fat, the protein casein and the sugar lactose. The first one is healthy without limit. It can be found in very nearly pure form in ghee and butter, so those products at least have nothing to do with the other two. Butterfat has an amazing natural trans-fat (not to be confused with the man-made monstrosities in hydrogenated oils) which is an amazingly healthy substance about which good things are still being discovered.

Proteins in dairy are no doubt healthy at least for the vast majority. Bodybuilders have long been using whey protein (found in milk) with no real bad effects.

Lactose is another story. As diabetics, we should mostly avoid it like all other things which become glucose in a matter of seconds.

Butter and ghee are among my staples as is heavy cream. I'll eat some Greek yogurt or "labneh" products as long as they have more grams of fat than protein and very little sugar (carbs). I wouldn't touch any yogurt sold in stores, full-fat or not.

It makes little sense to speak about "dairy" as if it is a single thing when such very different nutrients are extracted and isolated from it.

Cheese is my main source of calcium. I'm lactose intolerant so haven't drunk milk for years, but seem to tolerate cream and cheese just fine. Why do you ask?

Some people actually can't digest milk properly, and will suffer intestinal distress. If you're not that type of person, then I'd suggest you drink milk if you want, or not, and see if it makes a difference to YOUR performance.
