Default Help on structured diet.

Hello, This is my first post here and I was hoping for a little help. Our daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 last year at the age of 5. She is now on a pump and doing great. However my wife and I seem to view the approach on her meal plan differently. I know she can still eat what normal kids eat but believe at 6 years old we need to teach her good eating habits and moderation so when we are not the ones handling this she has good habits. My wife has taken them to the local icecream shop like 3 times in the last week for an example. We feel differently in the aspect I think we need to limit how often she eats these type of foods my wife thinks because her numbers are good we must be doing something right not to say we are doing it wrong. Any input on how you handle the moderation of your childs treats? Is this to much would you let your child indulge this often?

Hi rcarrier, sorry about your child's diagnosis. : (
My son too was diagnosed 3 months ago. He's 13 years old.
Your child's nutritionist probably has told you the same thing, let them eat whatever they want, just have bolus for it. Personally, I find that very misleading. I find the carb content in the meals very high, and changing their diet drastically might set them to rebel specially when they see their friends eat candy bars and countless other junk food. I started letting him eat a LCHF meal once a day. He likes the fact that he needs not bolus for it. (He's on needles still) I have taken him out for ice cream once since diagnosis. I don't find anything wrong in once in a while treats.
I think what you need to do is talk to your wife about this. Having a common goal for your daughter and find a compromise. At her age, you don't want your daughter confused about how to approach her diabetic care and nutrition.
I think there is a low carb ice cream option out there. Or if your daughter really likes ice cream, you can make homemade ice cream. It's in the recipe section on this forum.

Hi There and Welcome,

I think a frank discussion with your wife is in order. Your little girl's future is in your hands - learning from a young age (appropriate to her understanding) about how food effects her now, and the long term consequences (without frightening the life out of her) of eating badly, will hold her in good stead for when she becomes independent of you and making her own food choices.

Your wife may be struggling with the fact that her little girl is now 'different' from other children and as a defence mechanism is still treating her as 'normal'.

By pulling together you can both ensure a happy, healthy life for your special daughter.

Good Luck
