I was diagnosed on September 5th. I had an A1C of 8.9 and my BG was 203. I'm 6'4" and my weight was 235. I'm down to 206 and my average BG is 105ish for my fasting and two hours after dinner. The suit I am wearing in that photo I bought just before my daughters wedding in August. I am swimming in that suit now. My next A1C test is December 2nd. I'm taking two Metformin (500mg) a day and exercising at least 30 minutes a day. If I stopped taking Metformin, would I gain my weight back?

Also,

I have a friend who has had diabetes type 2 for three years and goes to a dietitian who still preaches a balanced diet. She test in the 170's and thinks that is low. I told her I'm testing consistently under 110 and she thinks I must be pre-diabetic.

The only way you will gain back the weight (on or off metformin) is if you up your carbohydrates and stop exercising. Great weight loss. I bet your A1c will reflect it also. Too bad about your friend.

Congratulations on your progress. I doubt that the weight will come back if you continue with your WoE, metformin or not.

Wonderful news!

If you stop Metformin, it will leave your system gradually - giving you plenty of time to see if the change allows your weight to increase. I suspect, like everyone else, LCHF eating will keep your weight loss stable.

I've actually done this - taken metformin and then stopped. The weight only returns if you go back to your old ways of eating. If you continue eating LCHF, the weight won't return. The metformin doesn't keep the weight off (trust me on this one), your new way of eating does. Congrats on your success!

Wow! I wish I could lose that much! I have been on LCHF woe for three week only lost 5lbs! Not exercising as much, only every other day 30 minutes and on Metformin 2x day. But men do lose faster and more than women. So great job and hope I see better results in the future.

To lose weight on LCHF, try reducing protein and increasing fat. I found that eating a lot of nuts (and almond meal muffins, etc.) kept me stalled on weight loss.

By the way, 5 lbs in three weeks is just fine. Remember, this is a lifetime way of eating and not a crash diet.

Your weight loss is great, however mine is even better! Been Type 2 for about 10 years and just started on Lantus August 1st. I started at 10 units and increased to 20. Then I started cutting back and now down to 12.

Anyways since August 1st I've lost 45 lbs, down from 225 to 180. I owe it all to what I call the "Diabetes Starvation Diet"...basically avoid anything with any taste.

In reality, I've cut my carbs way down and changed my diet according to my tastes, not what the dietician wants, but it's working. When I last saw her she was shocked that I had lost 30 lbs in 2 months. The doctor wasn't too upset as he knew that I was overweight. The dietician is going to have a conniption fit when I see her again in January.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that in July my A1C was 10.8 and as of 2 weeks ago it's down to 6.8 and should be even better come January.

Hello again, stillalive. This is the most we've heard from you about your diabetes management. I'm going to copy your post into a thread of its own so maybe you'll visit more often & we can help you drop that A1c down into the 5% club!
