"Researchers have found that reducing carbohydrates and eating more fat has a dramatic effect which could reverse type 2 diabetes in just 10 weeks. Obesity medicine expert Professor Sarah Hallberg of Indiana University in the United States, who led the study, said it is the first time she has seen such a drastic effect in a large group of people outside of weight loss surgery. The study found that 89% of 238 people in the research group who had been reliant on insulin due to the severity of their type 2 diabetes were able to dramatically reduce or stop taking it. ‘Diabetes is a state of carbohydrate toxicity. Insulin resistance is a state of carbohydrate intolerance. Carbohydrate intake is the single biggest factor in blood sugar levels,’ said Hallberg." New Dietary Approach
I love how this article calls the LCHF lifestyle a "new approach" to treating diabetes.

Basically, science is simply finally catching up to what many of us already know.

DietDoctor.com breaks down the LCHF lifestyle into categories
  • Strict (0-20 carbs daily )
  • Moderate (20-50 carbs daily)
  • Liberal (50-100 carbs daily)
In my humble opinion, the categories are not very important. What matters is finding how low YOUR daily carb intake needs to be in order to control your diabetes. For some people anything over 20 carbs per day is an issue. While others may be fine with 50 carbs or more per day. Some also find that it isn't enough to restrict their daily carbs but that they have a limit per meal that works best for them.

For me personally, I live a ketogenic lifestyle because that has worked best for me. Anything over 20 carbs per day, starts to increase my blood sugar numbers into a range where I don't want to be. We also have members who can maintain good numbers with 50+ carbs a day.

So how do you find out where that magic number is for you? By testing.

Keep a journal of your results so that you can track down patterns and then simply adjust your daily carbohydrates up or down as needed.
  • How many total carbs are you eating daily?
  • How many carbs are you eating per meal?
During the testing process, you can adjust up or down, as needed, to find the right level for you.

You will also want to make sure you are eating to your meter because while some foods may not be a problem for others, they may be an issue for you.

In the end, it isn't nearly as complicated as it sounds.

How many carbs can YOU have per day?

Reminder: I am not a doctor. I don't even play one on the internet. If what you are currently doing is working for you, please don't consider changing a thing. If however, you find yourself struggling to control your blood glucose levels, it might be time to look at how many carbs you are eating daily.

How many carbs can YOU have per day?

To me , this is a tricky answer.....

I do not know how many I "can" have. Since I was diagnosed with Diabetes 1 year ago, I have lived a ketogenic lifestyle and I only eat 30g or less per day.

But , I will assume I probably could have a little more. I will not chance it because I do not have the willpower to manage myself in moderation so I must stay keto adapted.

As far as I am concerned.... I am allergic to carbs (my diagnosis strictly for my head) so I will not eat anything with more that 5 or 6 grams of carbs

I found the Sarah Hallberg Ted Talk that discusses all of this. This video is definitely worth taking the time to watch it.

I mostly figure how many carbs I can handle at one time. Which is about 8-10g carbs. At this level there is only a 20pt rise at one hour, and my Phase2 insulin can bring BG back at 2-3 hrs pp. Much more than that I'll get spikes that can last for three hours or more.

This calculates to about 30g per day, but it could be more if I have more meals during the day. It is often less if I'm more diligent about filling up on fats.

I think the key is to test and know how your own body works with what you eat.

But, for those new to this way of eating it is good to have a daily limit to work within. It took me six years to get to know my diabetic body well.

I don't know how many I could have, I just try to keep it below 20g a day. Some days I don't go over 10. This works for me, it is easier to just eliminate grains, starchy veggies and other high carb foods than say 'I could have X amount'.

I like this. I say "I don't do wheat" instead of "I can't", and I'm adopting your mental reframing. "I'm allergic to carbs."

Mind you, I know enough to keep it to myself. I know plenty of people who would roll their eyes at such a preposterous statement. It is our secret.

I don't mind saying it as loud as anyone will hear me...

I AM ALLERGIC TO CARBS!!! or I AM CARBOHYDRATE INTOLERANT

I am in the best shape of my life. My BG is 75, my blood pressure is 114/80 , my resting heart rate is 54.

I run 5K+ almost daily

My cholesterol is 175

I lost 95 pounds in 1 year.

My waist size went from 46 - 32

I will shout it out loud because the results are 100% proven by me.

I am keto adapted. I love fats . I am allergic to carbs. I've proven it and im not afraid of anyone that rolls their eyes. Most of the time the people that roll their eyes are not nearly in as good of shape as I am.

Everybody is different but since last May, I have determined that my carb level is too high to maintain my previous 6.2 or less A1C as well as loose weight. I WAS at 105 gr./day. I cut to 90 gr/day. Still too much. I'm gradually increasing my fat with a plan to go LCHF starting May 1. Doc is ok with that but he thinks 40-45 gr carb will ultimately be my go to number (other health issues). We shall see. I'm happy to work within some of his parameters.
