Default It's all nuts!

Help! I am allergic to nuts (think instant botox) but almost everything I see suggests that snacks on nuts etc is the best way to go when it comes to quick manageable carbs... Not for me it isn't. Any other ideas other than fresh fruit?

Here's a thread that might be helpful to you.
http://www.diabetesforum.com/diabete...-snacking.html

This is the second thread about snacks. There's a link to the first one with hundreds of posts at the end of the first post. Between the two you should find a few things that suit you.

I like to snack on bacon, but anything that's low-carb is fair game for me - even leftovers.

My favorite is Fried Pork Rings with Salsa, spicy if you please! Low carb with fat...perfect solution. Or make some guacamole and dip them in that!

I also keep some 85% Cacao chocolate bars around. It took me a little while to get used to the low sugar, but the creamy chocolate is very filling. I recall that each square has like 8g of carbs....so I eat two for a snack at times....these are available in all super markets in the USA, they have chocolate ranging from like 50% up to 95%....of course the higher the Cacao content the lower the carb content...

Good Luck

Olives. If at home, I also use sardines (usually just one at a time).

A question- Shouldn't we be avoiding fat?

Nope. Carbs are the problem, not fat. Too much protein can be a problem for some. The great low fat diet was shown to be a complete failure on a population scale, so it's time to abandon that in favor of what works for a diabetic. What types of fat you choose is up to you - my oncologist recommends butter over margarine and olive oil and cannola over other oils. Other docs would cringe at that.

as long as you lower your carbs as much as you can (I only eat 20 - 30g of carbs a day) then fat IS YOUR FRIEND

(watch the video I put in your introduction thread)

as long as you are not a vegetarian...

Bacon , Hard Cheeses, eggs, jerky (look at the label) , veggies with melted cheese, pickles (salt is not as big a deal if you are low carb), pork rinds

low carb mug cake.. (many recipes online)

look at the recipe place for ideas.

I aim for 30-45grams of carbs a day (dietician says it is a 3-1-3-1-3-1 program with 3 carbs at the main meal and 1 in between).

ok looking at this Im confused... (sorry, its late in NYC... zzz)

3-1-3-1-3-1 = 12 grams.

where is the 30 - 45?

if you are only eating 30-45g of carbs, where are you getting the rest of your calories? going too low calorically is not a good thing for long periods. So if you are very low carb like this... where are you getting the rest of your calories if you dont want to eat too much fat?

No we shouldn't, unless we don't avoid carbs. Carbs were beginning to increase in greater amount in our diets as more and more processed foods were being introduced and less and less fresh foods were being eaten. Then some bad science came about looked at the fact that heart disease and other diseases had begun to increase. The bad science thought is was the fats being the cause, and it wanted to be right so it ignored everything that said that theory was wrong. They convinced all the right agencies that we needed to start recommending to eat more carbs and avoid fats like the plague.

I think if you look back at diseases, there is a very convincing trend that instead of things getting better as was hoped, they actually got worse. As they have continued to get worse, bad science still can't admit it was totally wrong. We need to have some fats they say, but we need to eat the ones they have processed and avoid all the natural fats we used to eat back when we were still a relatively healthy bunch. Again, they failed in getting it right. There never was, never has been, and never will be any proof that it is the fats causing the problem. Bad science has no intention to try and do the right thing. There is too much money being made by those profiting from the health issues brought upon us over the years by their initial assumptions.

No, I'm not a conspiracy theorist, because I have not said they knew where all this was going when it started. I have not said that .... yet.

When dieticians refer to carbs it is usually servings and not grams. A serving of carbs is generally viewed as 15 grams. I may be misfiguring this, but it looks like 3 servings for breakfast, 1 snack serving, 3 lunch servings, another snack serving, 3 dinner servings, and then a bedtime snack serving. My math is saying 45+15+45+15+45+15=180 grams of carbs, which equals your math if you multiply that 12 by 15.
