Default I can't get off carbs at breakfast!

Hey -

I am 4 weeks diagnosed, really high BS (17.9) and on 2x1000 Meformin, increased my exercise and following a low carb diet. I am only 41kgs and have high cholesterol so not committing to fully following HFLC just yet.

Diet wise, I have cut pasta, rice, potatoes, chips, crisps, cereals, chocolate and sugar completely from my diet. However, bread is a problem. I have a cooked breakfast every morning - usually eggs, spinach, mushrooms or meat depending what I feel like. But I am always having TOAST. OMG I love it with eggs - can't seem to eat eggs on their own without gagging.

I have stopped having bread at any other time of the day and only other carbs that I shouldn't have might be the odd cracker (ryvita or oatcake) now and again.

So, my question is - is it realistic for me to continue having bread in the morning at to get my BS under control or do I need to cut to cord???

Probably not, but these are early days for you with a change in diet, so it may get easier to drop the bread down the road.

Are you testing your BG after your meals with toast? If you test before the meal and then 1 hour after, you may see a spike that you don't like, and that fact alone may motivate you.

No sense in forcing yourself to eat something (eggs) that you really don't like.There are other things to eat for breakfast besides eggs. I know because I'm mildly allergic to eggs so they aren't on my menus. Oh thanks! - I was going to try some new bread recipes but been working a bit recently. This might work for me as I just need to get over this hurdle and I think things will get better as I genuinely don't miss other carbs.

They do make low carb bread. 8 gr of carbs/slice

I believe Weigh****chers multigrain bread works out to be about 8g carbs per slice. They are small but I will sometimes have one with my eggs and bacon. Not quite as costly as some of the other low carb breads.

MRSROK, journeys of a thousand miles start with a single step. If you have said goodbye to all those other carbs in just four weeks but still really really want bread with breakfast, well, you're still much better off now than you were four weeks ago. Don't be too hard on yourself right now.

Keto bread might be an option for you; no idea how easy it is to find where you live or if you can/want to make your own version.

Another option for now, if you're eating mass-market brands of bread, might be to try eating a little less of a really good bread instead. Maybe from a bakery or (ha) "artisan" bread. If it has more flavor and takes longer to chew and eat, less just might be as satisfying with fewer carbs.

Further down the line you can decide that you can go without the bread some days -- maybe eventually every day. It's the rest of your life and you need to make this sustainable for you. Good luck.

Yes, I have come round to thinking that this is forever and I need to do what is best for me at the moment because I am at real risk of becoming really depressed about it all now or in the future.

I think I've done pretty well all things considered and this is all going to take time for me to work out how foods change my blood sugar. I can say that I have had my first piece of chocolate yesterday since being diagnosed and I had an instant headache

Sounds like you are on a good road considering the time you have been on LCHF! For me I was so glad to find LCHF after years of struggling to manage my type II diabetes, I found it easy to STOP all my bad eating habits. That was in April of 2015, boy how time fly's. If you stay engaged to the LCHF model and continue to ask questions, you will find answers that work for you.

I have been faithful to my eating LCHF, but admittedly have had times when I ate something I should not, and my blood sugar readings always convinced me to not do that again.

For me, when I am not sure, or I decided to try something, I always follow it up with a blood test at 1hr, 2hr. and sometimes even 3hr. Then I have to face what is going on in my body, like it or not! That motivates me to move on and do not try that again! Something about seeing your BS shoot up, I mean you know you just destroyed a few more cells, probably in your pancreases which is already compromised.

This works for me and is consistent with the protocols used by LCHF....if you eat something you are not sure about....test your blood! You may be pleasantly surprized! If not then you will know for sure what your answer is to eating bread with breakfast.

There is a recipe called the "90 Second Bread." Someone named Katie posted it. It sounds good. I'm going to try it. I'm like you. I love bread, and it's been tough giving it up.
