Default Vitamins?

I've seen a lot of people here say they have completely eliminated fruit. Do you take vitamins to cover that loss?

I used to be an avid fruit eater (I LOVE oranges especially), and have really missed having them (and not drinking orange juice at all *sad face*). But I'm wondering if I should be taking some vitamin c tabs or a multivitamin?

My doctor did say I would be more prone to illness now (his exact words were "flu shots are a must"...I've never had one before :/ but...I've never had the flu either), so I'm just wondering if it's something I should consider.

well don't throw me under the bus but I won't have a flu shot ever.

Every person I know that had one got sick as a dog. That was me too with the one time I did get one. so it is not for me ever.

The only vitamins persay that I take are fish oil even tho I eat plenty of omega 3 foods, I still take 3 pills day. Lowered my trig to 102.

Vit D. . I guess I should take something else but I don't. Btw I don't eat any or much fruit. It just shoots me to the moon when I do. so very rarely i do have something . Blueberries or one of the berries. maybe a very small apple or even a pear.when I do eat one I put it with a fat like brie cheese.

Mmm. Perhaps I should try the fish oil. I'm on meds for my triglycerides.

Yeah I've heard of people getting sick after getting the flu shot. Always made me leery. Never had the flu - don't want it!

I've never had a flu shot and plan to never have one. I do take 2 grams of fish oil a day, and 5000 units of Vitamin D, plus a multivitamin. I might not need everything in the multivitamin, but taking it gives me one less thing to worry about.

There is NO vitamin, nutrient, etc. available in fruit that you cannot get healthy amounts of with vegetables instead - and the bonus is you get much less calories and sugar with it.

Vitamin C is readily-available in Bell Peppers and Broccoli - both at MUCH higher concentration than that in an orange!

I can't see why diabetes would make one MORE prone to illness, honestly.

For me I totally changed my diet because of my diagnosis, and I've been much healthier with fewer incidences of cold, flu, etc. than ever in my life.

Just my thoughts...

While taking care of my elderly parents, I started getting flu shots regularly. I even got the H1N1 vaccine when that was the big deal. The shots never made me ill. I plan on continuing them, because I appreciated the protection when flu started going around. I've had flu in the past, and it's nothing I want to go through again.

That said, I have no idea why diabetes would play a role in one's decision to get a flu shot.

I've never become ill from a flu shot either, and when OWC's dad was alive (he was an FP physician too), he would invite all us kids over on a pretty fall weekend and vaccinate everybody. Nobody ever complained & to my knowledge nobody ever got sick either.

My guess is the difference might be weakened live vs. killed virus - it comes both ways, y'know. It isn't something I go out searching for, and I sure wouldn't pay for it, but now that my doc thinks I need one due to my age as well as diabetes, I'll take it to make him happy - especially since I refuse to take his damn statins . . .

The only time I ever got the Flu was when I had the flu shot. So it doesn't always work. The reason they recomend flu shots for diabetics is if you are a poorly controlled diabetic you could get complications from the flu. I do take a mulitvitamin more because I don't eat grains and I need B vitamins. You can get all the vitamins and minerals from veggies. Just choose brightly colored ones. I do eat Avacados which have tons of Potassium in them. You can also get anti oxidants from dark chocolate, flaxseed, chia seeds and all sorts of veggies and green teas. OJ doesn't provide much , we have just been brainwashed to think it does.
