Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum - from what I've seen so far it looks like a wealth of information.

Anyway, I've been dieting for a few months now on 'The Man Shake' and have managed to lose 18kgs.

One question I have for any Type 1's doing this diet is: Has anyone found that it either contains more carbs, or more sugar than is stated on the nutritional information?

I have just gone on an insulin pump, and enter 1 exch for 1 serve of man shake, yet it seems to spike my blood glucose levels quite a lot.

Anyone else had similar experiences?

How many carbs per serving does this Man Shake contain? you will want to calculate your correction factor which estimates the point drop in mg/dl per unit of Humalog or Novolog. Also use carb factor or Insulin to Carb ratio which estimates how many grams of carbohydrate will be covered by one unit of Humalog or Novolog insulin.

There is also something called Glycemic Index which list foods with high rankings on the glycemic index which release glucose rapidly and also list lower ranked carbs which release glucose slowly. A separate value called glycemic load is one to monitor. It gives a more accurate picture of a food's real-life impact on blood sugar. The glycemic load is determined by multiplying the grams of a carbohydrate in a serving by the glycemic index, then dividing by 100.

Also you will want to be aware of how exercise, stress (both positive and negative), sickness like colds, and medications can impact your glucose levels. Think small when it comes to carb intake at any given time and thus lower insulin requirements as it can help manage your blood sugars in tighter ranges.
