Yes, I realize I need a 12 step program for my need to try "one more supplement". I was actually looking for something else when I came across an article that caught my attention.
According to studies, type 2 diabetic patients have significantly lower concentrations of the amino acid glutamine circulating in the body. Potential Benefits of Glutamine Supplementation for Type 2 Diabetes
I've been taking it since my bypass surgery in 2015. Started it as part of recovery from the surgery and have continued to take it for muscle recovery after hard bike rides. It is a very versatile amino acid Wasn't aware of the benefits for type 2 diabetics. Shame on me.
The study indicated a 30g/day dose - which I assume would be 10g (1000mg) with each of three meals a day.
I went looking for it on Amazon and found one not too expensive ($9 for 100 1000mg tabs, which would be a little over 30 days' worth). What caught my eye was several people in the reviews said it helped with carb cravings - which I'm struggling with right now. So I'm thinking it would be worth trying it for a month.
That's a HUGE dose! It mentioned 30g with each meal, not per day. 30g is 30,000 mg or THIRTY 1000mg capsules. 100 tabs for $9 would last just over one day.
L-Glutamine is somewhat involved in the Glyoxalase II process which cleans up methylglyoxal and other toxic by-products of glucose metabolism in the cells. These toxins have been found to be elevated in both T1 and T2 diabetics. I believe this is root cause, but the science is ongoing.
But scarfing THREE OUNCES of a concentrated amino acid every day is way to extreme for my taste.
20 -25 grams, a heaping tablespoon, powder form, in 8 ounces of water. @MCS told me I should take it when I was recuperating from my heart surgery. I take it after hard bike rides, sometimes even before if I plan on going on a hilly ride and I am still fasting.
Not an endorsement, but I buy the Now brand in in the 2.2 lbs jars. I think the serving size listed is a teaspoon or 5 grams.
OK, so the 100 capsules @1000mg each will last just over 3 days, not on. Still, a HUGE dose of a processed, isolated and concentrated amino acid and probably something it would be impossible to get from food.
From reading there, it appears that the usual dosing is around 4-5g per day. But, it does mention that taking 30g a day helped control blood sugar in diabetics.
The serving noted on the label of Cricket's first post on this thread shows 4.5g.
This is all a bit confusing. I'll need to do more reading on it before purchasing any and trying it.
I ended up buying Jarrow powdered l-glutamine.
1/2 tsp = 2g
I'm taking a 1/2 tsp twice a day... for now, and see how it goes. I went for the powder because I take so many supplements that it seems preferable to drink it than to swallow four more capsules. I mix it in lime flavored water - yum.
Hoping I see reduction of cravings and better will power.
