Low carb AND high fiber?
 
Dilemma here. After three months of LCHF my BG numbers are great!
Also had several tests, CTscans, blood, etc. and gallstones are found. Not sure if they happened over decades or formed recently.

Doc wants me on high fiber diet, at least 38gm/day but that is difficult to achieve. Worse, high fiber goods tend to be very carby.

Listening to him I followed the instructions with high fiber [and high carb] and in just two weeks my BG are creeping back up. 15 points!

Grrr. So, anyone experience this?

Do I just chose which method is going to kill me?

I think you just make some different choices. :smile2: I am LCHF and eat a good-sized bowl of salad pretty much daily. Bump up the fiber content by using, say, broccoli or cauliflower rather than cucumber or zucchini and you've got healthful fiber that won't break the carb bank.

You also could check out psyllium husk and glucomannan. Psyllium husk is available ground up and typically is sold as a laxative (or as an ingredient in them). I've seen LCHF recipes in which the ground husk is used as a coating for foods to crisp them up a bit. Glucomannan is a Japanese food that is pretty much nothing but fiber. It's pretty bland so it can go in a lot of dishes. It's chewy and must be chewed well but it could bump up your fiber count without bumping up your carb count. You'll find it in Asian grocery markets.

Yes indeed. Just ran various searches on high fiber and found many of my fav listed, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, almonds, spinach, several unsalted berries.

I just have to eat a lot more of them.

I have IBS / recurrent diverticulitis. My recommended diet for that is high fiber as well. I found that my system was a whole lot happier without all that fiber. I know that's what they recommend but that isn't always necessarily the best. Once I cut all the carbs grains starches sugars etc out of my system my digestive problems ceased to exist

And I will also say from experience once your gallbladder starts going, you might as well just have it out. It won't cause you any issues once it's out and your body will feel a lot better

I was down to eating tomato juice and cooked white rice before I had my gallbladder removed (no one said to eat fiber, just no fat, and it seemed everything bothered me.). After about 6 months post-op I did fine. Several years later when I started eating LCHF (emphasis on high fat) I found I needed to take bile salts with fatty meals in order to help digest fats. Everything's fine again.

Not everyone's experience is the same. In my case, my gallbladder was packed full of stones. Nothing was going to budge them.

Ouch! Six months for your post-op but at 80, I don't heal well.

What I meant was it took about 6 months for my system to be able to digest fats without having digestive issues.

I experienced the same thing with LCHF diet, although neither my total or saturated fat count is all that high. My creatinine levels doubled and I ended up having an MRI which found the gallstones. I then cut back on fat which led to higher carb count and higher numbers. I decided to try LCHF again, and my creatinine numbers are elevated again. At this point, I'm trying to juggle fat, protein and carb intake. At this point, if I could take a pill and bypass food altogether, I'd be thrilled. Spending so much time thinking about food and eating kills my appetite. Good luck.
