Default Sugar makes the body absorb water better?

I recently read that a bit of sugar allows the body to absorb water better. This might be important if I need to drink a lot of liquids to fight the covid-19 virus. But, should I avoid sugar because of my type 2 diabetes?

I should think that any benefit the sugar has is outweighed by the problem it would cause to your blood sugar control. Plus, there's always the risk that the sugar will trigger cravings that could be difficult to break.

Good question!

One of the reasons it is recommended that people eating low carb or keto drink lots of water is that higher levels of blood glucose tend to cause a body to retain water. Lower the glucose; lower the water retention. So that's where the "a bit of sugar allows the body to absorb water better" comes in.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 virus spreads even better in an environment of higher blood glucose. With the U.S. standard of care for diabetics set at keeping A1c under 7, that's why diabetics are considered at higher risk for severe complications of catching the virus.

So I agree with VeeJay. Eating a little sugar (or more carbs than necessary, really) is not the way you want to address this illness.

Put more salt in your diet, use bone broth, or stock cubes , I even put a tea spoon of salt swallowed straight down with a pint of water. Do 1/4 teaspoon at a time, or as much as you can manage. Watch Dr Phinney youtube.Salt needed because low carb => insulin falls ,=> salt lost from the kidneys.XS Salt prevents constipation, keeps colon moist by drawing in water from blood.
