Hi, I'm Canadian and will be flying out of the US in September. I've never flown with any kind of medication before. Will I be allowed to carry my glucometer and medications as carry on items or will they have to be checked. I'm kind of worried about them getting lost along the way. Anybody familiar with the rules? Do I need a doctors note?

Thanks for looking ....

I've flown many times and just let the TSA know my stuff was there. I have yet to fly with my pump though.

I'd say the easiest answer would be to contact the airlines and find out the restrictions. Id do it soon so if there is something you need from a doc you have plenty of time to get it.

Go to the TSA website and they give you all the regulations. I have never had problems with my bg meter or medications. All Rx meds should be in their original container. I usually bring vitamins in little baggies and have never been questions. Each airport may have different security procedures. In Cleveland everyone has to walk through the X-ray machine. So make sure you have nothing in your pockets. Even a slip of paper sets off the machine and they then do a hand search. For some reason the last time I traveled last month I was setting off the machine. I had yoga pants, sports bra and tank top, so no metal but the machine didn't like my body. If you have an Insulin Pump you can ask for a hand search.

I'm not sure I've ever flown without medication (domestically and internationally) and have never had one question about it. I also always travel with medication in my carry-on.

I would never pack and check any necessary medications as if they get lost you may have trouble replacing them.

Ive flown lots through Europe and a couple of times in the US.

My advice is
- bring a letter from your Dr with a statement that you are diabetic and your medication needs
- carry in your hand luggage (Ive never had a problem from a liquid perspective)
- Ive had many changes of thought on whether to declare first or whether to wait for them to ask about my pump. Most security people think its a mobile phone and ask me to take out of my pocket.
- Never under any circumstances if you have a pump detach and put through the security machine. Ive read that this may potentially damage the pump although this is circumstantial evidence
- If someone asks about your medicine or pump, politely explain and offer to show them as required. My worst experience traveling was when I told people I was diabetic at check-in (my early pump days), got an escort through security and was taken into a private room and frisked. Since then I have never volunteered

Hope that helps

twoputtpar - do I recall correctly that you don't take insulin, only oral meds?
