103 this morning
101 last night
My A1C was 5.8 this morning! The nurse came in and took my blood. A bit later the doctor came in and threw his arms out and said "You are the best diabetic I have!"

140 this morning. Exercise is getting back closer to pre-DX levels, vis, following my workout I went on a two-mile walk with my dog, then practiced awhile and did some yard work. Weight up to nearly 150 still 45 lbs shy but way better than 125. Used to eat truly massive amounts of ice cream with chocolate sauce and whipped cream on a daily basis just to increase calories. Doubt if I could do that now, so I'll have to figure another way to make gains.

So my doctor says to me yesterday at my endo. appt. that my blood sugar readings seem high in comparison to my A1C. So he gives me one of the two types of meters that his office can download at the next visit, so that I don't have to keep a written log, & because he's concerned the meter I am currently using may be not reading right since my FBS has been in the low 100s and post prandial has been anywhere from 160-190.

Okay, I'll agree. Not that hard. Two days per week until I go back next month, I am supposed to use the meter he gave me, and the other days I use my meter. Cool. I started using his meter this morning & got the highest FREAKING reading I've ever had in the morning -- 118!! (Yes, I did a control test, and the meter was functioning fine.)

SERIOUSLY??

A reading of 118 is quite believable. Meters are allowed a tolerance of up to 20% although most probably deliver a reading a bit closer. So, if your own meter reads a bit on the low side (my Accu-Chek seems to), and the new one a bit on the high side.....

To be fair, the number I'd be more uncomfortable with is your post prandial figure. It suggests that you're eating more carbohydrate with your meal than you can currently cope with comfortably. Do have a hard look at your menu. Perhaps there's a few things that could be trimmed back?

Thanks so much. You have been soooo helpful the past few days as I've been struggling, and thanks to everyone else, also. The meter I was using was the Walgreens brand, which was a True2Test. I was using it because the strips were about as cheap as the ReliOn from Walmart. The doctor gave me an AccuCheck Nano with strips, and it read 118. I've never seen a morning reading that high, so it really freaked me out. He has me testing 2 hrs. after the start of a meal, which I feel is wrong, because it wouldn't show my highest peak, but I will comply with his wishes. Maybe he's just trying to see if it returns to normal by then??

Yes, I am tightening up on my diet starting today. There are some tweaks I can definitely make. I really struggle lately with doing ultra low carb. I am going to eat low carb but increase to maybe 45 - 55 grams for a few days, until it's easier, and then scale back. I am going to increase in the carb areas for veges and low GI fruits, I think. I definitely have been eating more carbs the past few days than I should, so I am scaling back starting NOW!

Mary,

The two hour test is probably based the standard ADA check for below 180 at two hours. If so, it's much too slack for health. By two hours after the meal you are looking ideally for below 120 - but to start with, settle for 140

The rule of the game for us, when we play for keeps, is "eat to the meter". In other words, what your meter tells you is safe is what you eat. Other things, no matter how much they are promoted as "healthy", "heart friendly" or any other of the buzz phrases should get the boot!

If you haven't already seen it, I recommend this bit How to Lower Your Blood Sugar of Blood Sugar 101 . It sets the standard but as you've noticed, it does need you to sit down and think hard about everything that goes in your mouth - and incidentally will make you burn through quite a lot of strips for a week or so. Good thing you've got a meter that doesn't have strips priced at the top of the market (like the AccuChek!)

Mary, likes this.
