Clea, having lived in Austin twice, I know you'll have a great time! All sorts of good happenings there and fascinating countryside.

I'm also in upstate NY and it is like two different states, the city and upstate. Nothing alike whatsoever. Lots of us avoid the city like the plague. I have gone in a few times for Broadway shows, but exit in a hurry.

I once had a friend from England........I actually met her on an email list for bullmastiff owners. We got to be great friends. Her dogs and mine used to exchange Christmas gifts. It wasn't expensive, but we got some pretty unique toys and treats for our dogs that wouldn't have been available for them otherwise. It was fun and interesting.

Eventually, Clare came to NYC for a wedding, and we chatted on the list about my driving down to spend a day with her, letting her Mirage meet my Franklin, etc. Well lol others on the list soon envied that they weren't close enough to go meet Clare. It was just before Christmas, I remember, and you wouldn't believe what we did. We had members on the list from all around the country and we arranged a US tour for Clare the way rescue groups transport animals around the country, to foster care, and to forever homes. One person from Michigan met me half way, and I turned Clare over to her, who spent a day with her and then turned her over to someone from Wisconsin. She got all the way out to California, spent several days there with various people and came back via the southern route, through Texas, into Florida, then back up the coast to DC, where she got a flight back to England. She was in the states for just over a month and had a really great time which she said she would never forget. It cost her nothing, as we all traveled by car and she stayed in our homes at night and we all had a great time!

It was a unique adventure for all of us, and I don't think it could ever happen if it wasn't a fairly small closed list of mostly good friends who all trusted each other. Most of us knew each other personally from dog shows, breedings, etc. Something like this will probably never happen again, but your trip from England to the US made me think of it :O)
