I admit I'm a bit (OK - sometimes MORE than a bit) OCD. There's always a supply of batteries and such here.

Before the storm was anywhere close I had:

-Filled the car and gas cans

-Gotten cash (ATM's don't work with no power).

-Filled all the prescriptions that had 3 weeks or less remaining.

-The chest freezer was filled with bottles of water - the ice will keep the freezer cold longer than air will, and the water can be used later. The refrigerator freezer was packed with plastic containers of water to freeze - same theory as the chest freezer.

-Did every bit of laundry in the house, since I wasn't sure when I'd be able to do it again.

-Made sure everything I need computer-wise was backed up onto an external hard drive that went into the fireproof box which lives in a plastic tote in the closet next to the door.

-Bought an extra bag of cat food and an extra container of litter - so the wild house beasts did not try to consume us. ***grin***

-Everything outside that wasn't concrete was moved inside and the grill and iron patio set on the deck were bungeed to the deck posts. After the derecheo last summer, I found my lighter stuff in the next door yard - no notice and no time to secure anything. Don't want to do that again!

Here we have gas to cook with (no oven in a power outage, since there's electric involved in the controls) but we have the cook top that always works. The water heater is also gas, so we always have hot water - well, as long as we have water....but we have city water and sewer. There have been periods of lower pressure, or advisories to boil before drinking over the years, but we've never been completely waterless. I did fill two five gallon cans, and 6 or so one gallon bottles with water, plus we had a case of bottled water on hand.

Last summer, after the derecheo storm here (a quick but deadly 100 mph blast - only lasted a half hour but was devastating where it hit), we bought a 4500 watt generator online - got a great deal as the same generator is now $290.00 more!. The FedEx guy who delivered it in mid-July said he'd had 8-9 every day for the past week, and my neighbor who works for UPS said he had the same number daily. I figured that by having a generator, we would ensure that we never lost power again. Well - it seemed to work this time! ****grin****.

As to what to stock, food-wise, I pretty much bought what I would have otherwise, since I knew I could still cook, and the fridge would work with the generator. I did make sure I had a fresh supply of Optimist crackers made the night before the storm was to hit, as well as some cookies - one DOES have to keep ones priorities straight. A nice hot cup of tea and a cookie makes the world a better place.

Shanny and Carolina like this.
